I was willing to give the U900 ...Pierre Soudan -- 23/07/08

    I was willing to give the U900 a try because first I never had a slider phone and wanted to try, and then because it was some kind of love at first sight when I saw it;

I can say after only a couple of days that I am delighted above all what I had come to expect, the phone is really sweet to use, and its elegant Design will catch the eyes of many!

The good: -Stylish, Elegant and yet sobre DESIGN; it looks like it was sculpted in some marble or dark, precious stone; nothing to do with the plastic iPhone or Purple/Silver/Black/Blue Nokia N95... -Sturdy BUILT; the slide mechanism has a very nice feel to it, I have to confess I often open/close the U900 just for the pleasure of it! -True MULTIMEDIA: with Memory cards, there are virtually no limits to the amount of pictures, full length and full quality movies, mp3 and the likes you can enjoy... Not to mention the 5 mp camera, capable of producing very good pictures and quite nice movies. -Excellent SOUND; Bang and Olufsen worked on that one, and mate you can tell! -Plug and Play: don't even bother figuring out the Bluetooth profile (works perfect by the way), just get a USB adapter for the memory cards, and you can transfer from and to any source, Macs, PCs, Linux, etc. -Very COMPACT; I don't even notice I carry it until it rings... Very nice for those who like to slip the phone into a pocket (like me!), or the Ladies who carry tiny handbags, it will fit in.

The bad: -PROPRIETARY sound output; you are stuck with the provided, rather cheap earphones to enjoy the sound... UNTIL you get to eBay and order a $1,85 "Samsung U900 to 3,5 jack adapter", which allows you to use any standard output, earphones, speakers, etc. -AUTONOMY; not a real con, it is average but the thing is that the U900 can do so much that by the time you've listened to hours of mp3, taken photos, called half your contacts, etc, you will have to recharge it almost every 24 - 48 hrs. Almost ALL phones with similar abilities are in this range anyway... -NO memory card provided; same thing as before, just keep $45 or so to get a gigantic 8GB card from Sandisk for instance, so you never worry about saving space...

Everything works fine except f ...paul Lewkowski -- 31/07/08

Everything works fine except for the blue tooth connection for the handsfree. The unit pairs up fine to a number of different car kits(pioneer, jvc and parrot) but there is no sound at all from either the recievers or callers end. Samsung has suggested that it may not be compatible, but I find it hard to believe that it is not compatible with so many differnet devices. I thought it may be a faulty phone at first but the same problem exists with two other U900 phones I tried.

The good: The rest of the phone and it;s functions are majic!!

The bad: Blue tooth function for handsfree does not work with a number of devieces. Samsung is so far not willing to provide a software update to fix the problem.

I've had mine for three days now and I like it. This is my second Samsung and it's better in nearly every way.

The sound is not quite as good thru the external speakers as my A701 it replaces. I have a cheapy bluetooth earpiece which paired up first time. Only issue is that it is not very loud in the ear in the car at high speed, the old A701 was twice as loud.

I also have found that mif you have security turned on to lock out the phonebook, then when you are just typing in a phone number to call, it tries to automatch you to an entry/enteries in your phone book and asks for a PIN code - not smart whehn you are just typing away.

The good: Great look (without looking like a toy) Ease of use Very intuative

The bad: Security area could do with some common logic

Great review and so in depth, cheers as always ZDNET, I am about to go pick mine up. Oh and thanks to the samsung dealer who wrote the comment on 23/07. I was already going to buy one, but you almost turned me off it.

The good: I'm getting one tomorrow.

The bad: I'm coming down from a bender.

Overview

The good:
  • Good 5-megapixel camera
  • Great HSDPA data speeds
  • Touch panel is a handy tool
  • Excellent lag-free performance
The bad:
  • Conventional design
  • Dreadful pre-installed browser
The bottomline:

We wish it looked cooler, but then we often wish that of many in Samsung's range. Looks aside, the U900 won't disappoint people looking for a great phone matched with a good camera. HSDPA data speeds are excellent, especially for streaming media like Foxtel TV.
