Apple iPod Nano (3rd generation)

Design
Love it or hate it, and opinion seems firmly divided, there's no getting past the look of the third generation iPod nano. Gone is the candy bar design of the Minis and first two nanos. In is the iPod Classic shrunk in the wash look, which conspires to be both fat and thin at the same time. Fat because the new nano is now almost as wide as it is tall, and thin because it's actually millimetres thinner than the second-gen nano.

Does the new iPod Nano look fat to you?

The body is now a two piece affair -- an anodised aluminium front with a chrome back -- instead of the all aluminium version seen in second-gen unit, which we still prefer. Naturally the shiny back was a fingerprint magnet -- Apple should really include a cleaning cloth with all chrome-backed iPods. Worse though was its lack of scratch resistance, after just a week the back was scuffed worse than a rugby player's knee after sliding in for a try.

An upshot of the Nano's new shape is the fitment of a larger, brighter and clearer 320 x 240 2-inch screen -- up from 1.5-inches on the old model. It allows nano-ites to watch videos on their iPods for the first time. Thankfully the plastic which protects the screen proved to be more scratch proof than the shiny back, although we suspect that if you don't treat your Nano with kid gloves, you'll end up with scars that will your mar your photo and movie viewing experience.

Sited below the larger screen is a miniturised Click Wheel, which not only looks out of proportion but is awkward to use. By shrinking the thickness of the wheel, Apple has made it harder to accurately select items in lists or menus. And on multiple occasions, we accidentally hit Menu or scrolled when attempting to click the centre button.

The nano's only other external control, the hold switch, has been relocated from the top edge to the bottom, alongside the proprietary connector and the 3.5mm headphone jack. The new location now makes it impossible to operate the nano with one hand.

The 2007 iPods:

Features
Papa Steve has sent the nano off to uni. So while it may have lost some of its good looks, the nano can now do all the things its big brother, the Classic, can do. And even do some of them better.

Cover Flow, first seen on iTunes and the iPhone, allows you to flick through your collection of music as if you're in a record store. Although we're still not sold on whether it's a more effective way of searching for music it looks great, but only if a majority of your music has cover art attached, otherwise you'll be flicking through layer upon layer of blank albums covers.

2007's iPods debut a preview pane which splits the screen in half, with the traditional iPod menu on the left and a panning preview of your assortment of album art, video stills or photos on the right; it looks swish and we spent much of our time picking jaws up off the ground. There's currently no option to turn it off but that's of little consequence on the nano because, unlike the Classic, there are no hard-disk lag issues to deal with.

We were unable to test video output onto a TV because, like on the full-size iPod Classic, Apple has disabled video out from either the headphone jack or through docking devices without an authorisation chip. This has caused much gnashing of teeth on Internet forums as many video capable iPod accessories, ranging from AU$5 cables to far more pricey items, are now incompatible with the new generation iPods. Rubbing salt into the wound is the fact that Apple's new nano- and Classic-friendly component and composite cables are AU$79 -- cables for the old video-capable iPods are only AU$29.

Goodies:

Performance
You can say "au revoir" to the tinny, hollow sound that was a signature trait of nanos past; the new nano sounds as good as the full-size iPod Classic. Sure it's no sonic superstar but if you chuck away the included cool-looking but dreadful-sounding white earbuds, you'll get an acceptable level of sound.

Generally music sound a little flat, as if it's missing a certain something. When listening to Dave Brubeck's "Take Five", it's clear that the percussion lacks kick and the piano is missing its pleasant warm tone. On rockier tracks the vocals are harsh on the ears and gets painfully so when volume approaches maxiumum. Bass is satisfactory but uniformly dull.

We had few complaints with video performance, though. Picture quality is clear and crisp, there's enough processing grunt to handle action scenes and colours are well saturated. Indeed, the colours on the nano are a smidgen better than on its big brother, the iPod Classic; this is because of the nano's smaller screen size (two inches diagonally versus 2.5 on the Classic). As with all portable media players the viewing angle, both horizontally and vertically, is pretty shallow. The nano's almost square body is much easier to hold in the hand than the candy bar shaped Sony Video Walkman, and as such we suffered none of the neck and hand cramps that we experienced during our time with the Sony.

Apple claims 24 hours of battery life when only playing music and five hours for video playback. Although we didn't test these claims directly, these figures seem reasonable enough as we managed two days of music and video enjoyment on a full charge.

While we're still not bowled over by its looks, by almost every other measure the new nano is a far better device. For the first time you won't have to be a feature pauper to enjoy a compact iPod. And it's reasonably priced too: the silver-only 4GB model is priced at AU$199 and the 8GB model, available in silver, black, blue, green and PRODUCT(RED), is AU$279. And yes, we, like many on the Net, are irked by Apple's decision to disable compatability with old iPod video accessories and devices, but for those upgrading from a Mini or a nano this shouldn't be an issue.

really really cute. i bought one the day after its release and its great.

The good: everything, really simple yet lots of features

Just got it today and it's PERFECT.

The good: Compress it right and you can fit 40 full length movies (VisualHub is your friend), New interface rules, games big improvement on old nanos, VERY cheap

The bad: Most shops don't have any stock, so you have to order it off Apple. I'd reccommend it though, they're pretty fast (got mine in THREE days) and free engraving too.

i dont no why everyone is going on about how fat and ugly this is!
i saw the ad for it and fell in love straightaway! i ordered it off apple and got it in 2 days!!!
i reackon its way better than the 1st and 2nd generation. the 1st generation was really flimsy and heaps of my friends broke theirs, and both the 1st and 2nd generation were to long and uncomfortable in your pocket

The good: *It has a really bright screen
    *It has video!
*It's cheaper than the previous generations
*Its really light and comfortable in your hand
*It comes with free engraving and no postage and handling if you buy it off the apple australia website

The bad: I can't really think of any besides that it only comes in silver for 4g

This device is a huge disapointement, I'm returning mine

Try before you buy!! Try locking and unlocking, and navigating with the new smaller clickwheel

The good: Very small, looks bigger on the web
    video support

The bad: sharp border makes it hard to hold.
it's impossible to unlock and tune the volume or change tune with one hand
the new 'hold' button is impossible to move without using a finger nail and holding the device with another hand
screen will easily scratch if put in jean's pocket
scrollwheel navigation is imprecise and sluggish compared to first generation nano

someone said that "Compress it right and you can fit 40 full length movies"... is that for the 4gb, or the 8 gb... i'm thinking about buying a 4gb, but am soooo annoyed it only comes in silver... ^__^

The good: well, as far as i can see, everything looks spectacular... the only problem is...

The bad: the 4gb only comes in silver...

So far so good...i only bought it yesterday and it is my first apple product so i was a little confused at first.......but i seem to get it now!!

The good: It looks pretty cool
    its relatively easy to use
i like the split screen thing so as when u are looking through your music, u can see album covers.
The sound is not as bad as it is made out to be!

The bad: Having to drag each individual song from iTunes to the iPod was slightly tedious.... i don't know if there is a way to drag an entire album?

I have the 2nd generation iPod nano and the original shuffle. I haven't got this new one yet but it sounds like the reviewer of this product really dislikes it compared to other ones.

The good: - so excited coz it's got video!!!
    - cuteee
    - 4GB!!
    - compared to nano 2nd gen, its double compacity and cheaper still XD

The bad: i'll think of some bad points as soon as i've got one

loved it when i saw it on the web, wow was the word i shouted lol,

The good: excellent video playback, and photo quallity, game function is fab and it looks sexy lol
great to hold and great memory for your money

The bad: the back scratches sooooo easily, video playback drains the battery, especially on full screen brightness, and the hold button is a pain in the rear. and one more thing..... the colours are tripe, pale green and blue, and a red that looks purple, i got black cos it was colour that didn't lie. otherwise i'd date it if it was human lol

i fell in love with this as soon as i saw it, and i bought an 8gb one not long after.
it's kind of cheap compared to some of the others... but i still don't think it's worth nearly as much.
it looks really cute but yeah the back scratches really easy... but you get used to that. all ipod have scratched backs.
and also mine is starting to freeze quite a bit... i know how to restart it but it's really annoying.
i love how thin it is... you can slip it in to your pocket or your bra if you don't have a pocket lol and its so small you can't see/notice it.
i don't have a problem with the click wheel and it is actually possible to put it on hold with one hand...

    The good: it looks good
    the spilt screen in awesome
    nice colours
    improved games
    VIDEO!
    the screen
    good battery life

The bad: no recerding or other new features
not as much storage as other ipods
the 4gb only comes in black

Ive had mine for about 4 weeks now, its really great, I just replaced my earphones with some better quailty ones other then that no problems at all

    The good: great size

The bad: back seems to scratch easy so buy something to protect it

Have had my iPod Nano 3G for a month now.

At first it was very faulty with only taking a day not respond to iTunes which caused alot of hassle for me. Eventually I had to re install the iPod software off the apple website seeing as the iPod was corrupt. But now the iPod is fully working.

The good: Screen size. Video quality (as long as the video isnt from you tube etc.). Memory size. Cover flow idea. Brighter screen.

The bad: High chances of iPod being corrupted out of the box. Sound quality of earphone provided. Video playback operation sometime stuffs up. Click wheel sometimes does unexpected things. Back is easily smudgable. No screen protectors provided. 4 GB is not enough for heavy users. 4 GB only comes in silver.

    The good: video

The bad: lasted for two days.
    doesnt work at all now.
    itunes doesnt even
pick up that it is plugged in!!!!
    so fragile and breakable!!!!

The good: Finally, It Plays Video
It has Downloadable games By iTunes
Somewhat better Colours than iPod 2 Gen
This Split screen and Album cover Panning looks Sensational

The bad: 4G has Only Silver :( And the Colours are a tad bit Pale.
    Games cost Money
Videos are somewhat hard to get As in you have to download them and for me, Takes forever
Not looking forward to that Thin Click wheel

i bought mine in an aldi store for just about 170. i found it rather easy to use but that is mainly an oppinion that differs from each person and comes with different hand sizes. i love this little ipod. its tiny compared to the classic but still easy to use. in such a short period of time technology has grown so much producing a similar but tinier version of anything.
i now sit back and wonder whats next.

got mine yesterday opn Xmas Morning, 8 gig black
screen was crooked slanting to the left, click wheel over sensitive, click sound was different (more husky) compared to the other 5 3g nano's in my house (all fresh!)
then next day, as i was watching a movie i put on it, i noticed its already got a dead pixel on the left side with another coming to the right of it...and another below...
sadly my gf's is slowly gaining dead pixels also, but on the right side going down the side of the screen....sad...hers are barely noticable, but mine are driving me up the wall
$277 for this, and its already screwy...

The good: sexy, convert movies onto it!
    music = P
    comes in black!

The bad: other colours are a tad Homosexual
screen's aren't put in as well as they could be (my sister
s wone is the tensiest bit crooked, but not like mine)
click wheel is a horrible size, you scroll when trying to press the centre half the time.
    the lock button....

    screen is big

the other ipod wouldn't even boot read instruction
manual, perfect ..apart from those little hiccups..no proobblem( anyway if you use windows you should be used to these sort of problems)

    The good: small
    ipod is easy to use
    looks great
    good sound and video quality
price is reasonable for the 8g

    The bad: locked out twice
i thought apple would be a little bit more reliable

I ended up investing in a copy on eBay with tons more features and it's not locked into iTunes. Jobs just keeps reeling in the suckers and they just keep lining up like slack-jawed yokels.

The good: Looks exceptionally nice as there is no doubt that the best industrial designers were brought in for the job.

The bad: Technical package is cheap and nasty.
Operating system is a joke and glitchy as ever.
iTunes is the biggest sucker punch out there.
Suckers just keep handing over their parent's hard-earned money for this throw-away rubbish.
I've heard of built-in obsolescence, but this sort of junk takes the concept to a whole new level.

I love my iPod so much! Best little bit of tecnology ever made ..... YET! Everyone should stop complaining if hey dont like it take it back and get ur money ... even if it did have all those things wrong with it ( which it doesnt) the good things would easily out rank the bad!!

The good: It is SO cute!!
The blue colour skin is awesome! .. Very bright!

The bad: People actually spend there time on this website pick out the bad bits about the iPod ... i would like to see you make something better! And if you do tell me about it .. i would like to hear of ur "sucess"

Its a nice little model, and its good, but its really hard to use the click wheel.

The good: Small, nice quality of sound, light, plays videos.

The bad: Click wheel aint great, its hard to select songs precisely.
    Scratches way to easily

I have brought two of these ipod nanos,
    they have both stuffed up.
the first one resets its self when not on the charger that happened in the first few weeks.
the second one recently blew it and gets red hot and says that it is flat when it has been on the charger for hours and it says it is charged when it is on.
they are terrible and if the next two i get have any problems with them i certinaly wont be getting a new one.

The good:
  • Bigger, brighter screen
  • Video playback
  • Cover Flow and preview pane look sweet
  • Better value than ever
  • Audio quality much improved ...
The bad:
  • ... but still not great
  • New look doesn't appeal to everyone
  • Video out cables cost AU$79!
  • Thinner Click Wheel hard to use
The bottomline:

Honey, I shrunk the iPod! The new nano has all the features of its big brother, the Classic, but in a smaller package with fewer gigabytes.
