I got the 2 Ghz model. Half the system memory is consumed before a single application is loaded. This helps cause serious performance issues for the A200 under Windows Vista.

Downgrading to Windows XP speeds things up nicely, but many laptop functions won't work. Finding 3rd party drivers then becomes a long and frustrating journey , and some really important functions like the screen brightness hot key will never work.

The good: Looks nice Good Sound Fingerprint Reader works well

The bad: Struggles with Vista Poor memory upgrade options No driver support for Windows XP Sound does not work in Ubuntu Power supply connector seems like it could break easily. May be charged $60 per hour for phone technical support Fan can get a bit noisy, so watching DVD movies is not as enjoyable as it should be. Cheap plastic top and hinge.

Er... think about it. It is DDR2 memory. Double Data Rate. The only way to get the performance that this kind of memory provides is to have two sticks installed.

Selling it with a single stick of DDR2 would be dumb.

got mine a few days ago, i got the A200-1AX model
    Core 2 Duo 1.80Ghz T7100, 2GB of ram, 200GB Hard Drive, HD2600 ATi 256MB DX10 VGA CARD

The good: it rips apart apart al my games! rapes vista!

The bad: hard drive is 4200RPM, other than that, this thing is perfect.

I got Toshiba Satellite A200 (Intel Core Duo T2350 @ 1.86GHz 782 MHz, 512 MB RAM. 70GB SATA HDD with VISTA Basic.
But I cun 't add this one in my domain, so I reinstall VISTA Ultimate , it is very load but I able to add my domain network.

The good: Good performance. Good Key board. High Sound & Video Quality

The bad: but not enough memory & Battery time (Only 31/2 hours in Vista Basic) No Drivers for XP, But I got all drivers(NIC, WiFi, VGA Also) after lot of searching. But Hot keys not work in XP, So Unable to reduce LCD Brightness(But I reduce brightness through Intel GMA Driver for Mobile Icon in Control Panel. It actually not reduce Cool Florescent Lamp power-it work same power in high ), Due to High brightness it consume much Battery Power so only work around two hours in Battery on XP Plat form, but when come with Vista Basic worked around 4 hours in Battery. And it surface more glassy it difficult to maintain.

Absolutely worst notebook ever ...Algis -- 18/01/08

Absolutely worst notebook ever I had. Never imagined Toshiba can make this crap. I had before: HP Pavillion ZT3300, that was one of the best machines; Samsung P55-Pro - no complains at all; Apple Powerbook-no comments, but his one... I experienced a very expensive circus with Toshiba A200, I guess Win Vista remarkably contributes to the circus.

    The good: Fast enough, though.

The bad: 1. Not traveler friendly: battery life is less than 100 minutes on Balanced power mode. 2. Not for movie fan: DVD rom sometimes shows up in the Device Manager, but more often disappears, no updates helps ever. 3. Mouse pad is bellow any critique-too complicated to work with. 4. Noisy: Processor fan runs, runs and runs, whatever you do: write a text file, browse internet, or just watch a movie. It stops only when the notebook is turned off. 5. Not reliable: After computer is waked up, the HDD itself turns on and off every 2-3 minutes. 6. The OS, Vista (I have no idea what you can put into 12Gb only for system files?!), seriously need redevelopment. Toshiba instead of this crappy OS could make offer of WinXP...

My first notebook purchase of a Toshiba Satellite A200 core 2 duo with 512 ram and 80 gig HD from Officeworks for $650 cash. With the option of up to 4g of ram upgrade available I am considering a 2 Gig of Ram Upgrade for better preformance.

The good: Easy to use ,Black Sleek Lines.15,4 screen size ok Easy access to 4 usb ports and card reader at front.web cam unobtrusive.touchpad or usb mouse.

The bad: 512 of Ram is not enough to run Vista. Its Slow and cant handle any new program install.I think we all prefer the XP Pro OS..But with a future upgrade of a 2 g of Ram Stick I am sure that will fix the problem. With a added external Maxtor 160 g H/D for round $100 I should end up with an Ideal and Efficiant Laptop/Notebook for under $1000.

I bought mine on 30 oct 07 and i gotta to say it is a beast without being one. For those who claim that this PC is bad because you can't use XP, need to search the web because there are drivers. When this laptop came out it was modified with Vista drivers getting XP drivers would be work of your own which if your a student, its the worst.

I did however experience however a pain in the neck porblem with my LAN port. I cant use the net with it I JUST CAN't and it bothers me alot. My friends cheap laptop is able to plug and play LAN instantly but not mine. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHY PLEASE EMAIL ME: alphamangi@live.com.

Thats the only thing keeping me from giving it a 9

The good: ATI HD2600-is a powerful DX10 card that can handle most games on the market easily. Dolby options allow you to manipulate the sound to your satisfaction making the 2 laptop speakers sound like 5 (in terms of effect not vol.) Also amps and enhances the sound experience when headphones or speakers are pluged. Lid curves from the back making the 15in look smaller. This is why there are no ports. Battery life is sufficent for basic application like word and internet. 1.5hr-2hr.

The bad: Comes with Gigs of Toshiba packages that I dont even use. Some are needed to make things like dual touch pad work. I cannot use the LAN port for Internet like I mentioned earlier.

Its a good laptop ... excellent features and sleek design ... worth the price and value for money

The good: speed is good , and 120Gb gives a lot of space as well.. the best feature is the crystal clear LCD display

The bad: the keyboard makes some noise while typing very fast ... i am not sure how tp maximize the youtube file display .. becoz on doing full screen the screen comes blank. rest of video files on other sites like VLC etc can open properly.

The good: Easy to use, Good look, Fast Speed, Better Features than HP, Compaq , Dell etc.

Great value for money. Got mine a month ago from Dick Smith for under $1200. 2Ghz processor w/ 2GB RAM & 160GB HDD.

The good: 1. Cheap as. 2. Screen display is really sharp and bright (I'm half blind). 3. Decent processor - Real quick to rip DVDs (when DVD Rom works) 4. Reads a range of memory cards (no more adapters!!) 5. Has webcam!! (quality is not so great, but with a bit of tweaking, results are acceptable) 6. Keyboard layout is great (DEL, HOME, END etc keys are positioned very conveniently. On other laptops, it takes half a day to find the DEL key, and if you are not looking at the keyboard, good luck). 7. Have I mentioned it is great value for money.

The bad: 1. DVD Rom sometimes disappears from the device manager. Can't figure if it is Vista or faulty DVD Rom. 2. Poor battery life 3. Only comes wih pre-loaded software and VISTA. No Vista CD or recovery CD. Software lets you create your own or use the one in hidden partition. 12 bloody GBs worth. 4. Lid is a fingerprint magnet.

im into making music and working on audio editing and it has survived..today i tried to connect it to my plasma to watch a HD(720p) Movie. it played the movie, but it was choppy and slow. the sound was ok. i need to upgrade this to 2 or 3 GB..hope that wont cost too much

The good: 1.awesome speakers 2.Convenient Media Center Buttons 3. Webcam (as crappy as it is) 4.Card reader 5.Sweet Glossy Screen

The bad: prone to attack(alot of people complain about their DVD drives disappearing from the device manager but its actually a virus that edits the registry for disk drives) i managed to fix it and now i have like 4 anti virus and spware tools on my comp

The good: So far everything is good,,,dam good. Got this baby from Harvey Horman (blacktown). It was last one ....$1300.

The bad: slow boot up time....more then 1 min. New models are out now.....

I am writing this on my Satellite A200, which, as of 20 minutes ago, has a broken power cable. The connector on the end is overly flexible and poorly soldered, and comes apart very easily

The good: Good all rounder laptop Decent graphics performance Better than average notebook sound

The bad: Low quality (ie. already broken after 2 months) power cable Prone to overheating

The good:
  • Well priced
  • Multi-purpose notebook
The bad:
  • Designed primarily for productivity
  • No next gen DVD drive
  • Limited upgrade path for memory
The bottomline:

The A200 is a good all-rounder notebook with plenty to offer those on a budget. Just don't expect a performance powerhouse at this price.
