Manufacturer: Acer
Also bought the 4810TG SU9400 duo processor model, largely for business use, a bit of surfing and as a travel companion because of its weight and loooong battery life. Youtube renders fine with the high end processor, audio a bit tinny with speakers but very good with dedicated earphones/headsets which would be the norm if travelling by rail, road, sea or air!
The duo processor copes fine with Vista and the best news is that it comes with a free upgrade to windows 7 when it launches.
The keyboard is very responsive and feels solid; a pleasure to use compared to some of the Dells, Toshibas, Acers and HPs notebooks the household has owned (12 to date..)
The HD CrystalCine screen is vivid and compares well with all the offerings I've checked out at Harvey Norman's, JB Hifi and Good Guys.
First day of ownership and it feels great; yet to feel remorse, unlike some of the other laptop purchases I have made.
The good: Lightweight Slick form factor, solid chassis esp screen backing Incredible battery life (8-10 hours with routine stuff) Great keyboard Good price package ($149 cashback before July 31 and free Win7 upgrade)
The bad: Not a gaming machine Tinny setreo speakers Finishing on some of the ports (USB) look rough and hurried
i'm really amazed at the "unbiased" portrayal of vista - i never had any problems with vista. Now xp. thats a different story. i never had to reinstall an operating system so many times!
back to the notebook, i think it is cool that this machine runs FINE on vista, thank you very much. I only use it to surf the net, play some usic and chat. So this machine was great!
The good: Battery!
The bad: erm about everything else. i mean, no kidding but The Sims 2 won't even run on this machine, not to talk about the sims 3.
I shopped around for a while on Amazon, and settled on the Aspire 4810TZ for long battery life and price. I liked it out of the box, seemed to run fine. I don't multitask on this "home" laptop so I figured the solo processor was fine.
However I have found that playing movies is not what its cracked up to be. Performance is reasonable but when I scroll to the middle of a file (have tried both WMP11 and VLC now) its send the computer into a tailspin, CPU goes up and program crashes. Error code not helpful in diagnosing. I don't know if there is a setting I need to change here, but of course Acer customer support is based in India now, so not exactly helpful. In the end, I may send this back to Amazon...
Since when did vendor battery claims actually represent the truth? Acer's Timeline notebook just keeps going and going and going, but it's a pity that it's otherwise underpowered and hampered by Windows Vista.

I simply love this computer. First I'll start by saying that I'm not a gamer. I'm a businessman. I use it for excel, web browsing, and some other basic stuff. I'm not really an expert on speed so I won't comment on that. It is physically beautiful and perfect. The keyboard is fantastic. Similar to vaio and I've heard one of the apples. It feels solid. This is my second Acer the first one being the acer one and I'm hooked. Acer's just have that solid, quality feel. The screen is great. One problem that I've had with acer's is the settings for the mousepad. You have to go into mouse settings when you get this computer and adjust them. Once you get it right it's perfect. I got the model with 4g of ram and the faster processor.
The good: Physically perfect. Thin battery is awesome. Quality. The keyboaard kicks ass.
The bad: None although you need to go into the mouse settings to get the mouspad right.
