Toshiba have introduced the Satellite 1000, a mobile computer aimed at first-time notebook buyers and budget-conscious customers. Satellite 1000 series carries an Intel Mobile Celeron 1.06 GHz processor and weighs about 2.8 kilograms. Costing a little over AU$100 per kilo the base configurations of the laptop are priced at AU$2,900. In Part, the laptop's cost has been kept below AU$3000 by the inclusion of a mobile Celeron CPU rather than a mobile Pentium III Processor-M. "The first-time notebook buyer needs an easy to use PC with full productivity features to perform their daily tasks, not an elaborate machine loaded with frills," said Mark Whittard, Toshiba national marketing manager. According to Toshiba the laptop provides all the key features essential for mobile computing. It contains a DVD-ROM, 14.1 inch TFT active matrix display, 15G hard drive and 128 MB of memory, allowing users to view DVD movies and run memory-intensive software applications. The laptop are equipped with three USB ports and a swappable modular bay that enables users to switch between the optical and floppy drives, or add a hard drive.
