AMD Athlon 64: the benchmarks AMD's Athlon 64 launch marks the dawn of the 64-bit desktop PC era. We evaluate the efficiency of the new CPU using over 100 benchmark tests.

The long-awaited 64-bit processor based on AMD´s Hammer architecture is finally available for desktop PCs (manufacturing problems delayed the desktop Hammer launch by about nine months). The full Athlon 64 range comprises four chips:

Desktop processors

AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 2.2GHz, dual DDR400 interface, 1MB Level 2 cache, Socket 940 (US$733)

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2GHz, single DDR400 interface, 1MB Level 2 cache, Socket 754 (US$417)

Notebook processors

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2GHz (US$417)

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz (US$278)


AMD´s Athlon 64 is the first 64-bit processor for desktop PCs.
