You're on the road and you get an urgent call from your boss, who wants an important file, but your notebook is back at the hotel. What do you do? You can use vVault to attach the file to an e-mail message, even if you don't have the file with you. This free Web-based
service is a useful tool for wireless Web devices.
Unlike other free online storage sites, vVault is optimised for mobile professionals. After uploading your files to the vVault site, you can send them using a WAP-compatible pager or WAP-compatible mobile phone.
On a WAP-compatible mobile phone, the small screen makes the process somewhat awkward. You have to move through numerous menus, and typing a lengthy message with the number keys can be a real challenge. On some phones, you can access the built-in address book and avoid having to type the recipient's e-mail address.
Though vVault is optimised for wireless devices, you can use it exclusively with desktop and notebook computers. From the site, you can view files, send files, and create public folders to grant file access to coworkers. vVault provides 25MB of storage for each account.
To help assuage corporate fears about about uploading sensitive documents, vVault keeps its customer data in a secure database behind a firewall. Security personnel monitor the database 24 hours a day. vVault employees do not have access to customer passwords.
If you frequently need to send files when travelling and prefer not to carry a notebook, vVault could be just the ticket. The service can be a lifesaver when important files are needed right away.
