O2 Xda Atom Life

The Atom Life tries very hard to bridge the gap between serious business tools and lifestyle gadgets. It's surprising, then, that it's a better business tool than fun phone.

O2 Xda Atom LifeDesign
Are PDA-style smartphones just tools for the business set? O2 doesn't appear to think so. It's latest smartphone, the Xda Atom Life attempts to bridge that gap between people who need a business tool, and those who want something with just a smidgen more "fun" appeal -- O2's marketing spiel refers to them as "life warriors", a term you won't see in this review again.

A more cynical reviewer might comment that O2's presumably trying to get in on the market before the lifestyle crowd shifts over to the Apple iPhone -- but then, you can buy an Atom Life right now, whereas the iPhone is conspicuous by its absence from 2007-era Australian store shelves. Or any stores shelves right now, come to think of it.

The Atom Life has a carrying weight of 145 grams and dimensions of 106 by 58 by 18mm; that's a touch smaller than the Xda Atom or Atom Exec, although only in one dimension. Aside from minimal dialling buttons and a five-way selector, the Atom is entirely touchscreen-driven, either via the stylus that sits at the top right hand side of the phone, or a grubby digit in an emergency. More on digit-related issues later.

Features
The Atom Life is an HSDPA-enabled phone running Windows Mobile 5.0, which gives you access to the usual Windows-centric office applications -- Word and its ilk -- but then that's hardly a "fun" set of utilities, and moreover, the same things can be had on considerably cheaper PDA/smartphones than the Atom Life. Where the Atom Life differentiates itself is in a few key hardware and software features with less of an enterprise bent. On the hardware side, it packs a 2-megapixel external camera (along with a front-mounted VGA model for video calls) and SRS WOW HD Stereo speakers, with the claim of offering a surround sound "experience" for your multimedia files. It's also equipped with an FM radio, if "wacky" morning DJs are your kind of thing.

On the software side, O2 provides a bevy of its own applications. Many of these are still business-centric, but on the "fun" side is O2 MediaPlus. MediaPlus is a catch-all wrapper for the Atom Life's multimedia prowess, covering your photo, video and musical collections, as well as activating the radio.

For those who drool over technical specifications, the Atom Life is running an Intel XScale PXA 270 -- that'll give you 624MHz of computing power -- with 64MB of RAM and 1GB of flash ROM. Networking connectivity is provided via integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 1.2 and infrared for talking to phones from the Jurassic age.

Performance
If you're pondering a smartphone purchase, it's well worth the time to play around with a couple in a store, especially if you're looking at models with a touchscreen interface such as the Atom Life. Some users love the minimalist approach of touchscreens. Others find them incessantly fiddly, and the need to pop out the stylus to make calls and perform onscreen selections can become tiresome. It's such an individual preference thing, however, that we normally wouldn't mention it -- except that it's a particularly relevant point with the Atom Life, as the main splash screen is packed with information, and above all tiny icons. That's great for getting across plenty of onscreen information, but virtually mandates the use of the stylus. We lost track of the number of times that an errant finger jab led to the wrong selection being made. Thankfully, a spare stylus is included in the box.

While the speakers are undoubtedly good for a mobile phone, and they are loud enough to annoy everyone within your immediate vicinity, they don't entirely live up to the hype of offering a surround sound experience. It's largely that old trick of dodgy hi-fi stores everywhere -- turn up the volume loud enough to convince the customers it's "good", when it's merely passable. While we're covering off audio, it's functionally annoying that for a phone of the Atom Exec's size, the audio jack is of the 2.5mm variety, making it harder to connect up a normal set of headphones. A2DP Bluetooth audio is supported if you've got stereo Bluetooth headphones.

The Atom Life is a decent expansion upon the existing Atom and Atom Exec models, but there are areas where it's a backwards step, especially in battery life. The standby time of 200 hours is essentially unremarkable, and it's understandable that the addition of lots of battery sapping features will lead to higher power consumption. Still, with a claimed battery talk time of only four hours on GSM and two hours for UMTS -- and in our testing these figures proved all too accurate -- you're likely to be recharging the Atom Life every single night, lest it become the Atom Death.

On the application front, the Atom Life shone, thanks no doubt to the improved processor running the whole show. We rarely had to wait for applications to start up, even when really pushing the phone with heavy tasks. This does make the Atom Life a good choice for exactly the market it's not aiming at -- business types who need large files open and will really test the phone's productivity mettle, rather than its fun aspects.

the fastest hybrid pda in the market... check the 600mhz processor under its hood...and is hsdpa capable (really fast internet browsing using 3G!)...better than any hybrid pda in the market- hp including...the only drawback is the need to recharge the pda everyday for heavy users...but visit proporta.com for an economical solution...they have a device that can recharge the phone several times without the need to look for an electrical socket!

Four ways to increase tour Atom Life battery life:

1: Download and install WM6 from O2 site.
2: Use the GSM band only (I used 900).
3: Turn off recieve all incoming beams.
4: Set the CPU profile to Best power.

1 day increased 4 day or more battery life.

    O2 Atom Life .. a poor performer Anonymous -- 22/10/07

this phone is getting a roasting on a lot of forums. see http://www.businessmobileasia.com/products/handhelds/0,39062255,40031860p,00.htm for example (business mobile asia). I bought two of these phones a few months ago after having 5 XDA phones. The old XDA phones are fantastic and one of my colleagues has gone back to buying XDAs off ebay because the O2 atom life has stopped working. Check my posts on business mobile asia. my o2 atom life has isses (both did) from buttons not working, buzzing speakers, poor camera quality, poor battery life, having to wait 20-30 minutes on power to start up the phone if battery went flat, centre toggle button not working, poor button functionality, speed doesnt live up to stated MHz coz its slow as, etc. etc. These arent just issues with me .. they are happening amongst a lot of other O2 atom life users .. and the issues seem to come out months after first purchase.

Today my phone speakers stopped working Anonymous -- 22/10/07 (in reply to #320088456)

    Screen is loose

I agree .. this phone is junk Anonymous -- 22/10/07

I have had this phone for 2 months during which it has worked for less than 10 days. The first phone I had overheated. After much argument about whose fault it was (note it is always assumed to be your fault) I was given a replacement phone. This phone now has a screen that does not work and hence the phone is totally useless. I have yet to get to the HK repair centre as I live in Taiwan but service on line has just been rude and unhelpful. Basically go to the rpair centre, then you are on your own.

Poor customer service for Australians Anonymous -- 23/10/07

O2 Australia has extremely poor customer service for Atom Life and O2 phones generally. Not only are your calls rerouted to an overseas call centre... you have to deal with arrogant call centre staff unacustomed to the Australian accent, the call centre staff have mediocre "at best" command of English listening skills, including poor sensitivities in respect of Australian cultural expectations in respect of customer service standards and problem solving expectations we are generally accustomed to, there is ONLY ONE repair centre in Australia and its just a repair centre that sub contracts to O2. Its not even an organisation owned by O2/inhouse servicing. POOR O2, VERY POOR .. im very angry at the treatment i have received from O2.

If MWG don't get their act together re service in Australia will not be buying another 02 .. which is a pity because they have some very smart looking PDA's coming out. (e.g. Orbit 2, Zinc 2) Have not experinced any real quality issues as only had a usb connector replaced ...but for that one time service was the pits

Poor Customer Service Disappointed -- 24/01/08 (in reply to #320088486)

I would have to agree - shocking customer service. I can watch the battery being drained by the minute with the phone sitting there doing nothing!!! I am so used to doing a hard reset every other day that I could do it in my sleep. Above all - just the worst customer service. Does anyone know if 02 have an actual physical office in OZ. If so - please let me know as I want to put a silver nail through the heart of my machine and send it back - it is possessed

O2 Atom life issues ... this phone is horrible Anonymous -- 24/10/07

after reading your reviews, just had to add one more...having used this for 6 odd months. initially was still fine but the screen starts to freeze every now & then. If phone goes out of network range (underground) sms received disappears, had to restart phone & sms will then appear marked under sim memory.
phone always hangs when updating music library...have since downloaded the sms backup software & gonna go for WM6 to see if i can revive stability.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE, ITS HORRIBLE :(

bad start to what i thought was a good phone Anonymous -- 25/10/07

Been having trouble with my O2 Life also Switched it on and it loads to the blue splash screen and does not go any further ... - soft reset - hard reset -- - taking battery out and inserting it back in again - call O2 support and they told me to charge the battery for 10 hours ? THEN do the rom upgrade... This is wasting a lot of my time. I dont have time to waste trying to sort out problems with a faulty product :( let alone send the phone away by post for repairs to a repair centre and be without a phone.

    VERY BAD BATTERY - DON'T BUY Anonymous -- 22/11/07

I bought the atom o2 life and its battery life is very bad. After a full recharge it lasts for a single day (maximum 2) even without making calls or using the device as an MP3 player. I called the customer service and it is the worst customer service you can deal with. They confirmed that there was a batch of faulty batteries, but they refused to replace mine.

    Very bad Anonymous -- 28/11/07

This is a very bad device and a waste of money. I donot understand how can a company with a prospect

of competing with big companies produce a very bad device like that. It is not a stable device

requires reboot at least 3 times a day, output sound is very bad, camera is bad and its battery is

useless and worst ever customer service. a $200 device is better.

Is the Atom Life really that bad? Anonymous -- 01/12/07 (in reply to #320090658)

In theory the phone appears to be very good and is the only phone I can find that meets all my requirements, but the reviews seem very poor.

Is it really that bad? Does upgrading the ROM to WM v6 resolve most the issues people are having?

Check google... Ron -- 06/12/07 (in reply to #320090826)

check google. yes, as a user of 3 atoms .. 2 of them failed atom xda lifes i can say this phone has been a dissapointment. i tried everything even upgrading to WM6 but the issue is also HARDWARE. buzzing speakers, failing speakers, buttons that dont work... poor button placement.. i mean .. the buttons are embedded into the phone that its hard to turn up the volume when on a call or turn down .. so the buttons arent finger friendly. poor picture and battery quality...big time! .. there are just too many complaints associated with this phone on various forums.. unfortunately i had bought and the only thing that prompted me to jump on the net and see whether this was common problem among users or a bad batch .. to my horror.. it seems MANY MANY users of o2 atom life and o2 exec and atom pda phones generally have been having a constant chorus of complaints. Im certainly taking my business elsewhere. i can tell you for certain the customer service in Australia is ROTTEN. the calls get diverted overseas and the people there AT THE CALL CENTRE are just order takers .. dont bother with the rotten, miserable piece of good for nothing garbage. O2 .. you've lost me as a customer. my business isnt buying another phone from you. The proof in the O2 pudding is this. Check vodafone, telstra and three and optus mobile. Have they had an o2 phone as a package? NO! .. that speaks volumes when major phone companies push a lot of branded phones as a bundle but not the o2 atom phones. what does that indicate. ... certainly suss to me. hope this helps.

    O2 atom life comment Anonymous -- 10/12/07

Along with all the other posts in this and orther related o2 atom life forums, i have been totally dissatisfied by the O2 atom life: need to reset several times a day, system regularly blocks or shuts down etc... The O2 repair center have just reflashed its Rom twice and nothing more! I have been surprised to see after reflashing the ROM with the WM5 available on O2 website, the device works much better... no need to reset for several days! and the device still works even the battery is 3% charged! So it means that the WM6 based ROM provided by O2 is just a sh.t! And it seems that they don't really care providing bad software that cant allow normal use the device they sell. I woud suggest other customers to do the same as me, and give their comments. If we confirm that the WM6 ROM is bad, we should request O2 to provide a acceptable ROM. The WM5 has less functions compare to WM6.

Poor service Pattya Singh -- 11/12/07 (in reply to #320091412)

However good or fantastic a phone is, it is still a simple machine, which may need service. That is where the reputation of the Company (O2) shows, as I have learnt, the hard way.
It has been more than 49 days!!! that is 7 weeks and yet the company has not been able to locate a display replacement (O2 Atom) but that may be too much to expect, as they are not even responding to emails. Such is the reputation and service of a company – O2.
I have tried through friends and acquaintances to source the display from Dubai, Singapore but O2 does not even have spares there too nor do they seem to have any clue as to where it could be available.
Imagine a mobile company such as O2, which packs features in its PDA mobiles for the benefit of its customers to optimize time, doesn’t seem to care less in providing simple after sales service!!
O2 ATOM is a fantastic piece of equipment, having outstanding features, which could be upgraded, considering the competition in the market.
Some basic features seem to be lacking, such as SMS backup, regional settings setup (such as India), local fonts (Hindi, Marathi, Indian), and a fragile stylus.
Many times the phone hangs for no reason at all!
Worst of all, all please note, is that this marvelous piece of technology is extremely delicate and fragile, prone to easy damage, by a simple fall!
It is very easy for your mobile to slip out of your hand and fall to the ground. Such a simple fall could easily set you back by a minimum of USD 200 for a display replacement, which is if you are lucky, that they have one!!
I had such a miserable experience that my O2 ATOM slipped and fell to the ground and my misery continues. It’s been more than a one and half months, since I contacted the local O2 service center personally, for the display replacement but they don’t have the spares.
Also contacted their India head office in Chennai, over phone and O2 Asia Pacific support, by email, for display spares.
Imagine a mighty company like O2, claiming to have revenues of more than £6.683 billion, 35 million active mobile customers, seems to be making no efforts for delivery of spares!!
In this day, when service parts are shipped across in less than 72 hours, O2’s lack of response and delay in procuring spares should necessarily be highlighted for O2 users and future customers over the Internet, as already, it has been more than 30 days since lodging the complaint.
What good is any phone when there is there is no service available? Imagine paying around USD 760 for such a premium phone and then it is useless for lack of the basic spares and service!!
Also their lack of response to repeated reminders, even an email to their CEO, simply shows the attitude of the company, “BUY AT YOUR OWN RISKâ€
Day by day my frustration about the company adds up to say “ DON’T BUY O2 PRODUCTSâ€

For your consideration Dr. Edward Blakely -- 23/12/07 (in reply to #320092108)

You have been warned: Dont buy this phone. Remember what I say to you. Heed this advice. Think carefully what you are about to buy if you are considering. Research well and question your need to buy this phone. Do not use emotion alone but sound reasoning based around a good cross section of research on the net. Read bad reviews as well as good. I can thoroughly tell you as a heavy mobile phone user and purchaser of a number of O2 atom, atom exec and atom life products I am NEVER GOING TO BUY ANOTHER O2 product again. My final challenge to you for your detailed consideration. Why dont the major phone companies in Australia bundle O2 PDA phones in with plans? Telstra, Optus mobile, vodafone, three etc.? You tell me ;) They all use palm, dopod, imate etc but no O2 phones. I'll leave that answer up to your research.
    Pros: no comment
I draw your attention to the need to research this phone well before buying. Furthermore I recommend that you dont buy this phone which is my personal opinion as a FORMER USER of O2 products. Unless you, my friend have a lot of time to spare following up problems and issues...otherwise, research well, make your opinion and have a nice day.
