More iPaqs coming soon?

Is there another iPaq just around the corner? If handhelds site Brighthand is to be believed, HP's H2200 series will soon be making an appearance.

As is often the case, information on the new handhelds was first uncovered on the US FCC Web site, which documents devices approved for the US. Notably, the rumoured series is said to feature Bluetooth and offer both CompactFlash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD) expansion slots.

The dual expansion feature will appeal to users looking for greater versatility. For instance, the CF slot can be used to hold a Wi-Fi card while the SD slot houses extra memory. The H2200 is also said to be SDIO-capable, so users will be able to use SD-based accessories such as FM receivers.

According to the grapevine, the H2200 series will run on 400MHz XScale processors, with variants harnessing 64MB and 128MB memory. The devices are likely to weigh about 155g, making them heavier than the H1910 but lighter than older H3900 handhelds. Another interesting development is that the H2200 will possibly become one of the first handhelds to sport the new Pocket PC 2003 operating system.

The H2200 is therefore likely to be a solid, middle-of-the-road machine for HP, both in terms of price and features. While not as flashy as the biometric-capable 5400 series nor as handsome as the H1900 family, it seems to be a vital cog as HP fills out its portfolio and embarks on a more active handheld strategy.

We will update our site as more information on HP's mystery device becomes available--and it could be sooner than you think.
