Sony Ericsson K750i

We can barely fault the 2-megapixel K750i from Sony Ericsson, which is a very compelling and easy-to-use handset for mobile users looking to upgrade.

Sony Ericsson's K750i is the first 2-megapixel camera phone to hit our shores and will be a sure-fire hit for the three year old mobile phone manufacturer. Sony Ericsson is currently the fifth biggest mobile phone maker worldwide, behind Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and LG, according to figures from research company IDC.

In terms of looks, the K750i continues on the path set by its three successful predecessors, the T610, T630 and K700i. In regards to capabilities however, it follows on from the S700i, Sony Ericsson's first camera phone to break the one-megapixel mark.

We're quite fond of the K750i's form factor: small, black and sturdy. On the back is a lens cover that protects the 2-megapixel camera. When opened, it activates camera mode and the display is used as the viewfinder. Settings for the camera are laid out in landscape orientation which prompts you to tilt the handset 90Ã,° anticlockwise to a horizontal position. With the shutter button located on the right-hand side of the phone, this feature makes it feel like you're using a proper digital camera -- and onlookers are none the wiser that it's actually a camera phone. Once you're done, sliding the brushed metal lens cover across deactivates camera mode and returns you to the menu where you left off. If the keypad was locked before taking a picture it will return to that state.

Sony Ericsson K750iThe keypad is laid in suitable Sony Ericsson style for candybar phones. Backlit in white, there are three shortcut keys at the top, a tiny five-way navigation thumb stick, back and clear keys, and slightly raised numerical keys that sit flush with one another. On the side sits the aforementioned camera shutter, a volume rocker and a music button.

The K750i's 176 x 220-pixel TFT screen displays 262K colours, has user-adjustable brightness, and is customisable through wallpaper, themes, screensavers and a sleep mode.

No doubt the 2-megapixel camera is the K750i's biggest selling feature. It will be a while until the Nokia N90 becomes available, which will up the ante by adding a Carl Zeiss lens and the same resolution as the Sony Ericsson.

Still photos and video clips can be taken with the K750i, and a range of settings are available for both. Panorama lets you stitch up to three photos together, burst mode takes four shots in rapid succession, and there are 24 frames to choose from to add to your photos. Other camera features include macro for close-ups, night mode, self-timer, white balance, and effects such as sepia, solarize, and B&W. There is also a blindingly bright light beside the lens that can assist while taking a photo in dark surroundings -- or purely as a torch.

Sony Ericsson bundles a 64MB Memory Stick Duo, which clicks into a slot on the side, to store pictures, videos and music. The media player supports MP3, AAC and WAV (maximum sample rate of 16kHz) music files, MPEG4 and 3GP videos. 32MB of internal memory is onboard for contacts or alternative storage if the card gets full.

An easy-to-use FM radio is available when the stereo headset is attached and has 20 preset slots for stations. Radio Data System (RDS), which enables broadcasters to transmit artist and track information, is supported but we could only get the name of the station (eg. Nova 969) to display.

Pressing the music shortcut key starts and pauses tracks and you're able to browse the K750i's menu as per normal during playback. If you're looking for a phone with more of a music focus, Sony Ericsson will be launching its Walkman-branded W800i very soon. Alternatively, Nokia's 3G-ready N91 will sport a 4GB hard disk when it is released later this year.

Organiser features include an alarm clock, calendar, tasks, notes, stopwatch and timer. Additional Java games and applications can be downloaded using GPRS. POP3 and IMAP e-mail is also supported via GPRS -- which is somewhat slow compared to 3G networks.

Uses of Bluetooth on the K750i include handsfree calling with wireless headsets, wireless networking with a PC or laptop, and transferring files (including photos and music) between mobile phones and PDAs. Sony Ericsson also includes Remote Control, an application that pairs with a Bluetooth-equipped PC or notebook and allows users to control PowerPoint presentations, Windows Media Player (no iTunes, we're afraid), and the desktop.

On the bundled CD, Sony Ericsson includes drivers for using the K750i as a modem, software for synchronising Outlook contacts and calendar information with a PC, MMS composition tools, an image editor, and a SIM card manager. Slide show software Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 Starter Edition is also included.

Without a doubt, the K750i is the best camera phone to hit the market so far -- and not just for its 2-megapixel muscle. Auto focus ensures that photos are sharp, although we found a steady hand is necessary for this to work.

Remote Control worked well past 10 metres when paired with a USB Bluetooth adapter on our PC. The Presenter option under the K750i's Remote Control allows you to wirelessly launch a presentation by pressing '2' on the keypad, the volume rocker on the side takes you back or forward to the next slide, while the '4' key blanks out the current slide with a black background. Similarly, the keypad is laid out with multimedia controls for Media, and keyboard and mouse directions for Desktop remote control.

It is hard to fault the K750i, but improvements could be a 3.5mm jack for headphones -- we find Sony Ericsson's ones slightly uncomfortable -- and mini-USB for connectivity, rather than a proprietary port. Even with Bluetooth activated, we found the K750i only needed to be charged every four days or so.

We give a big thumbs-up to Sony Ericsson for not only being the first to market in Australia with a 2-megapixel camera phone, but an innovative and almost flawless one at that.

    Faulty K750i Sony Ericson Anonymous -- 15/11/05

I recently called into Telechoice at Rosny, Tasmania. The person there said that I had a virus due to blue tooth and it would be best to send it away to be fixed. Optus Service Request form number 1142795 sent on 30/10/05.
I have also had problems that are not being looked at at present. The phone will not synchronise with a computer. I tried it on two separate computers trying to save my data before it was sent for service.
I am very distressed at having spent $700.00 and having this sort of trouble. I do not like my valuables being tampered with and after a great deal of thought and worry would appreciate a brand new phone instead of this one which would have been pulled apart, etc.

    K750i Problems David Knudsen -- 03/12/05

I've had my K750i for about 3 months, it looks like a great phone on paper, but in reality, I want my K700i back! My first handset was DOA, and replaced after a 2 week wait from Sony Ericsson's 30 days department.

My new handset refuses to connect to any non-SE bluetooth devices, so I had the firmware upgraded, now the phone crashes 2 or 3 times a day, randomly turns itself on silent, refuses to take photos about half the time and still wont connect to non-SE devices. I wrote a formal complaint to Sony Ericsson Australia, who called me 3 weeks later with a "We're working on a software update"

Not good enough for my $700 investment.

I think this mobile is great. From day one it has been the most reliable phone ive used to date. All you people who say its a dud phone need your heads read, or your just very un-lucky and got faulty phones. GOOD JOB SONY. I also syncronised it with my lap top, NO WORRIES. Its also very good for all my music, Full Tracks, Very Happy. Never been into silent mode or never turned off itself.

    Sony Ericsson K750i Peter Munt -- 19/12/05

I bought 2 phones; one for my wife & one for myself.
So far a wasted $7oo on each phone. They both randomly go into silent mode and have to be reset to get them ringing again when we eventually find they are not ringing.
The silent mode button turns the phones onto silent mode but will not turn them back on.
I constantly miss important business calls and now have a $75 prepaid Nokia as a backup for my car hands free. The Nokia gives no problems and is simple to work; however, it cannot take photos. Photos with the K750i taken outside are excellent except that you cannot see the screen in bright light to focus. Photos inside are grainy as I do not have a flash. The main purpose of purchasing the 2Mp cameras was to have them always available for photos on job sites without having to carry a digital camera all of the time; unfortunately, this cannot be the case as many photos are taken but not saved.
in addition, The phones crash from time to time.

In total agreement. The K750i is full of bugs. Anonymous -- 15/03/06 (in reply to #120125544)

I have a K750i and have found the sotware siezes up if I get a call while the headset is plugged in. It often seizes up even when the headset is not plugged in. In other situations I've called a number, only to see the seconds being counted and not being able to hear a single thing going on at the other end. This problem is only rectified by restarting the phone, which doesn't always work with the power-off button - requiring the manual removal of the battery to restart. Love the looks, love the camera (apart from not saving photos occasionally) but in the end it doesn't work as a phone when all you want is to be able to make and take calls. I wonder if they'll take mine back...?

dudz, maybe phones differ from one to another. i have a k750i and i dont have any problem with him. it works flawless, it saves all my freakin' pictures, it doesn't block or something, it sounds good. maybe those who are talking this thingz are paid by competitors (for s.e.) because it's a good phone. what are you talking about? i find those accusations very hard to believe. maybe it's because of your provider, because the provider modifies the software a little. i live in romania, i got it from Orange. it works just great and the photos are very good outside. inside, the are not quite as sharp....and yes, you must have a steady hand. but if thats the only problem....see ya

    Sony Ericsson 750I Problems Whitie -- 31/12/05

I have had my 750i for 3 months now and I can't say I'm happy.
    1. Silent ring tone at random (seems a common problem)
    2. It wont reboot without removing the battery.
    3. Locking up at random.
    4. And the latest, the LCD has a "crack" in it without any impact damage.
    5. To top this all, the LCD problem, VOIDS all other warranty issues so the techs tell me. An extra $90-$100.00 to replace the LCD at MY cost.
    Be careful with this phone.

I'll go back to a nokia any day.
and at times the phone may ring it gives you no time to answer it!!!!very frustrating.....

Similar problems with my k750i. Randomly goes into silent moded, black square, random reboots. Sony Erricson seems to know about the problem and claim that a software upgrade due in a few weeks will fix the problem. Looking at Internet posts this has been an issue for months and they have not tried to fix the problem. These phones are not toys. They are expensive and people rely on them for work. SonyEricsson support for this has been just terrible. *Most* of their support people are unfamiliar with what is an obvious problem, and certainly have not provided a solution. Their firmware update software has not worked for weeks. They do encourage you to exchange the handset, which surprise surprise makes no difference, as the bug seems to be present in all the handsets.

Each time they have replaced it, so i'm guessing it is fairly common. Not sure what to suggest, but if it was water damage i dont think any of the buttons would work. Not an expert but I have dropped a phone in a pint of coke and then it really didnt work.

I have had no problems to date, however it is a concern to read the many grievances from K750i customers. Are these messages being sent to Sony? It is one thing to list all the wonderful features of a phone..but 'the proof is in the tasting'. Want your money back? read here Anonymous -- 10/06/06

I was browsing the net for problems people have had with their K750i phones, considering I recently had problems with mine, before I returned it to the store I purchased it from with a full refund (7 months later).

I can give advice for people who bought their phone outright in NSW (that's the jurisdiction in which I practice law): You all have rights as consumers to basically get what you paid for. If your phone doesn't work the way it should, there are 2 things you should do to get your money back:

    1. Write a letter to the store manager you bought your phone from explaining the problem, and ask for you money back. Mention in the letter the date by which you wish to be contacted by the store manager. Be nice.

    2. If you get no response, or you're not offered a refund, forward your complaint to the Office of Fair Trading NSW(or equivalent consumer protection agency in your state). They will assign an officer to investigate your complaint and speak to the store manager on your behalf. By law, if the product you purchase is not of 'merchantable' quality, you have a right to get your money back.

Now that I have my money back (as well as every other person here who falls into the category by which I'm offerring advice), I think I'll buy myself a cheap reliable Nokia, a small MP3 player, and cute little camera :)

I took it to the repairer they tried to repair it, I got it back and it was still broken, so I took it back to the repairer again.
this time they replaced it with a brand new phone with sonyericsson's 1 month replacement guarantee, this replacement phone I got diddnt work from the start, it had a problem with the bluetooth and the software was locking up, so I took it back to the repairer. they tried to fix it and couldnt, so then they replaced it with a refurbished one. At first I refused to pick it up 'cause I diddnt want to accept a refurbished phone after 3 weeks of buying a brand new one.
I called Fair trading who put me on to the Communications Ombudsman, who put me on to Simplus management. in time I was advised to pick it up so I went in to pick it up. As I turned it on, it goes through a setup procedure and LOW AND BEHOLD the joystick diddnt work!!! #^#&@))__#@ I let the explicits fly. When I calmed down I handed the phone straight back to the repairer and they took it in and replaced the joystick module, I got it back a few days later only to find that the joystick had a funny feel to it, by funny feel I mean it had a notch when moving the joystick down, it was clicking and getting stuck. after close inspection I realized that the joystick wasnt sitting center in its little place and after using the joystick after a day it has almost completely become unusable.
A gentleman at the service center told me that there was a common fault with the joystick, so I called sonyericsson about this and the rep I spoke to admitted to me that there was a consistent issue with the joystick, but he said that they put it down to wear and tear, hmm,,,, 2 weeks of owning a phone, the joystick breaks and there is nothing I can do about it because its wear and tear. Im stuck with a refurbished phone that I am locked into a contract paying $700 for. Mind you, what hurts me the most, is the fact that the brand new replacement phone I received diddnt work from the start, so basically I never got the chance to have a new brand new phone.
If sony ericsson say that this is because of wear and tear, why havent they redesigned a new joystick module to replace the ones that keep breaking because of 'wear and tear'? Also, the next model phone released by sonyericsson has this joystick problem fixed. im not stupid, im not smart either, but what I see here is a design fault. A design fault that sonyericsson dont admit to. If it wasnt a design fault, why would sonyericsson redesign the module for the next model phone? If a common problem came up with a car, the component was redesigned and replaced under warranty. so why doesnt sonyericsson just admit this fault and fix it?
Anyway, there is one thing I have to admit, and that is that my carrier, Simplus, is being very helpful about it all. unfortunately their hands are tied with sonyericsson's brick wall approach to customer care, though by going through the steps they are getting it to the point where I am defiantly going to receive compensation, at most I could get a different model phone that doesnt have this problem. I wont accept another refurbished phone, though I will accept a brand new sonyericsson k750i on the condition that if it breaks it gets replaced again with another brand new phone.
To sum it all up. sonyericsson dont care about the people that buy their phones.

This phone is a waste of money Joey -- 12/09/06

I own the K750i for 9 months now. I was a very happy user until some buttons refused to work last week. The Buttons 1,2,3 joystick-left and "ok" are not working any more. It looks like a mechanical error. Sometimes they work, but most of the time they don't. I have updated the phone, took the battery out etc. nothing works. I think it is a bug, one of many that this phone has. Because this phone also freezes sometimes. I read that there are more people with this type of phone where this bug occurs. And making a photo sometimes doesn't work because it says the memory is full, and then you have to reboot the phone...

About the phone itself without the bugs: Great screen, nice camera, sound is good, radio function also very nice. I only dislike the small buttons and the little joystick that is not made for comfort and functionality but for looks.

    K750i Software update Anonymous -- 19/10/06

Maybe im one of the lucky ones but I havent experienced any of the problems with my k750i mentioned on this site or on any other site. I purchased my phone only 3 weeks ago as an Optus (Australia) Pre-Paid. So maybe there has been a software update since you guys (who have problems) purchased your phone. I know the CD-Rom that comes with the phone has the software that you can use to get on the internet and updaye your software.

I have same problem. I wonder why. It works fine on a card reader but when I insert it to my phone it just keep of blinking a white screen. Can anyone help me.

fix your problem (memory cards ) Anonymous -- 17/03/07

you need to copy all data from the old card to your blank new one. the phone needs the existing folders to work properly.

faulty phone. poor customer service. Anonymous -- 21/05/07

this phone stopped working properly after six months usage. first the camera would intermittently not work and later it would not turn on at all. this happened while the phone was still under manufacturers 12 month warranty. the service centre I sent it to told me that there had been 'water damage' even though I had never got the phone wet. this meant that sony would not uphold the warranty.

also the metal logo plate started peeling off after a couple of months.

    poorly constructed phone.

customer service was very unhelpful and would sometimes not even reply to my queries.

White Screen of Death Anonymous -- 28/05/07

My phone has been in the local repair shop now for about a week. He is still trying to fix it. Tried new screens, batteries, connections. Nothing seems to be working. I own it outright so I have to foot the bill myself. Just seems that as the phone gets older it dies. I use it for hours everyday for work. It's either clipped on my belt or in my pocket. I've had it in a protective case since I bought it, because I work outdoors.

On a bright note the joy stick is only starting to fail now.

    Sony Ericsson K750i Tullybanana -- 15/01/08

Absolute Lemon!!! After only a couple of months the joystick packed it in and then the camera (works sometimes). Connection to a PC is like playing Russian Roulette and charging it is the same. I have the very latest software / firmware from Sony Ericsson's website but still have all of the problems. DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE PHONES! For your own good!

This phone is full of bugs. Anonymous -- 02/03/08

Ever since ive gotten this phone, problems just keep showing up .First day i got it,it worked fine for 5 hours (including charge time -_-).Then bam, an annoying white screen came up and refused to go away. After forking out an arm and leg to get this phone's screen fixed one more annoying problem came. The menus wont work properly. Then the camera quit working ,it kept telling me to open the latch ,when the latch was already opened(luckily i used a vkp patch to fix it,if u have the same problem just google it.).Keep in mind the phone has never fell.I spend more time fixing the phone than using it.Man,if i didnt hate Nokia that much id probly switch.Worst Sony Ericsson phone ever.

No different story Anonymous -- 22/04/08

Mine is no different story either.... The display denied to work and shows me a white screen instead. Pretty bad exp. huh.

Sony is crap!!! Anonymous -- 02/06/08 (in reply to #320100223)

I'm having same screen of death with a W810i. Contacted Sony Ericsson Australia, they replayed with a standard script without answering at any of my problems! I'm on a two year Optus contract, Optus does not want to replace the phone. They generously suggested me to pay $750 to get out from the contract!!! Very smart people!!! No anymore Sony and no anymore Sony Ericsson!!! What a such unprofessional people!!!! Be aware people don't buy their products.

No problems with my K750i Anonymous -- 15/08/08

I've had my k750i just over 12 months and I have had no problems with it. Mine was bought as an Optus Prepaid after a lot of research.
I work in Retail and my company used to stock the phone, and none were ever brought back with any problems. Not even with the joystick. My Phone has been dropped on concrete hundreds of times, from a height of at least a metre, and it still works.
Lexar makes(made) Pro Duo cards that work, I have a 512mb in mine and no probs, everything is on there and always stays there even when I've added things to it.
I'm actually beginning to wear my phone out, the lens cover is scratched and partly dented, the black is wearing off on the corners, but no manufacturer faults or software faults. Same as with my younger brother's one.

Then again, maybe they got their act together with the Prepaids ..

My phone is fine except Anonymous -- 27/11/08

my cam stopped working for a while it would focus but not take a pic no matter how hard i pressed, but that fixed it self, the headphone are touchy at best i have to hold the phone still, i can't put it in my bag or pocket or the plug stops connecting and i lose the radio. the charger has stopped working today and the left 'ok' key and the 3 button are sticking down and not working. so it charging on my computer, thats the only cable that works at the moment. but my phone is over 2.5 years old now.
