The Xda Atom has Wi-Fi, a 2-megapixel camera and runs on Windows Mobile 5.0, yet shares the same dimensions as the Xda II Mini.

Design
O2's Xda II Mini has been one of the most popular phones reviewed, so we were especially keen to get our hands on its successor, the O2 Xda Atom. At first, visually speaking, it's hard to obviously tell the two apart, save for the obvious switch from a silver style scheme to an all-black one. The Atom is marginally smaller than the Xda II Mini at 102 x 58 x 18.5mm versus the Mini's 108 x 58 x 18.1mm, but that's more of a paper measurement -- we'd challenge anyone picking up both phones to intuitively feel the size difference without putting them side to side.

Physical features are pretty much as per O2's standard take on smartphones, which means that you've got a small five way selector at the base of the phone, surrounded by call accept and decline buttons and dedicated buttons for the program Start function and the integrated O2 Media Plus application. The small stylus slots neatly into the top right of the phone, which also houses a MiniSD memory card slot and the phone's power button. The rear of the phone houses the Atom's 2-megapixel CMOS camera, as well as a strobe flash. The Atom's display is a 2.7" TFT LCD touchscreen with a top resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.

O2 Xda Atom Features
If you can't connect to something with the Xda Atom, you're really not trying. For a start, it's a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (GSM900/1800/1900) phone. Moving beyond simple mobile telephony, it's also Bluetooth capable and Wi-Fi capable, albeit only to 802.11b speeds. For the true relics amongst us, it's even IrDA compatible, although we're not sure anyone's using infrared to send anything via mobile in this day and age. There's an obvious battery hit to take into consideration for each and every one of these technology inclusions, they're still good to have as individual connection options.

On the PDA side, the Atom runs on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 platform, which offers the usual suite of office compatibility tied into a PC running the ActiveSync application. Beyond spreadsheets and documents, the Atom also ships with O2's MediaPlus application, which gives an integrated approach to viewing multimedia content with a very distinct Windows Media Center-type feel; it'll play back music and video, display pictures and run the phone's inbuilt FM radio application from a simple tappable interface.

Performance
O2 warned us that the unit they were sending us for evaluation was a pre-production sample -- and we could hardly miss the splash screen that warned us of this fact every time we powered the phone up. This puts us in a tricky position to accurately gauge the Atom's true performance, as it's hard to say that any particular issue might not be solved via a future ROM upgrade. Still, many of our observations of the Atom's performance had less to do with issues that might be resolved with ROM changes, and more to do with the phone itself.

As with the Xda Mini, the biggest hit against the Atom is also the unit's biggest area of appeal, in that it's a very small smartphone, and you won't feel like you're holding a brick up against your ear every time you make a call. The downside of miniturisation in this case is that everything else -- interfaces, screen sizes and virtual keyboards -- is smaller too, making it a more challenging PDA than its fuller-sized cousins. It's less of an issue for jotting small notes, but if you need to send a long e-mailed response to a business query in a hurry, you may find yourself struggling.

The MediaPlus application is a smooth bit of software design -- or, if you're the conspiracy theory type, a neat bit of interface thievery -- but you'll either have to load files in via ActiveSync or via MiniSD card. The MiniSD card inclusion is a touch disappointing, as there's plenty of SD users out there, but many fewer with MiniSD cards outside of the mobile world.

O2 rates the Xda Atom as having a battery life of 150 hours standby and 5.5 hours talktime, although that's almost certainly a figure achieved with Bluetooth silenced and Wi-Fi switched off. In our testing we found the battery lasted around four days of moderate usage, although how much that was affected by the pre-production ROM in our test unit is impossible to say -- we did experience a few crashes in that time that could have preserved or even drained additional power.

The Xda II Mini was certainly a hit amongst our audience as it dominated the early months of the year when it came to choosing our top mobiles, and given that the Atom is essentially just a feature set upgrade and a coat of black paint on the same basic design, we see no reason why the Atom won't fare as well. If you're after a small smartphone, the Atom is a solid, albeit not exactly inexpensive choice.

I don't understand why the keyboard and GPS are not part of the Atom???

About keyboards?????? Ramon Fabular -- 26/03/06 (in reply to #120125865)

Just accept it that this model don't have a keyboeard in w/c i don't need for this size. There's another model from O2 if you want one. The built in input capabilities are superb and suffice enough in all this small gadget can do.

    Keyboard / GPS ZoomCities.Com -- 26/12/05

Atom is made to be small, it will defeat the purpose of it, if it has a keyboard. About the GPS, I think Atom is not built for GPS functions.

Keyboard / GPS Anonymous -- 28/12/05 (in reply to #120125983)

The mini pro about the same size has keyboard as well as the one of the Dopod model. I think keyboard is important for small pda phone as the on-screen keyboard is too small too difficult for entry purpose; moreover, the new window mobile 2005's landscape screen orientation allows keyboard that slide out from the side.

GPS is good for navigation and can be a valuable tool.

What is the mobile reception of the Atom like? Anonymous -- 10/01/06

I currently use an O2 XDA II and am looking to upgrade to the Atom however, I'd like to know what the Atom's mobile phone reception is like. My XDA II reception is so annoying I now use it solely as a PDA and have my trusty Nokia handle the phone side of things. If the Atom's reception is the same I may as well just buy a PDA.

Anyone able to confirm whether the Atom has good mobile reception or not?

Atom's reception Ramon Fabular -- 01/03/06 (in reply to #120126765)

I'm in China. I changed a of sim cards from city to city. The reception is very good and i even ask to people i talk if how do i sound and it's pretty satisfying that nobody's complaining. I do experience bad lines but that is due to network not with Atom. Overall performance is very satisfying.

phone fred -- 18/08/06 (in reply to #120126765)

to me the voice quality of the phone is poor. Volume is OK but I think it is clipped. It is certainly distorted.

Also on the screen, there is no quick indication of missed calls.

    The buttons are too small.
Maybe I have big clumsy fingers but I get too many errors when dialing using my fingers. The keypad numbers only use the left two thirds of the screen. Nice large soft keys for the numbers would be better and all the other keys they have could been deleted or moved up. After all we have a real send key right there why do we need a second soft key.

I believe that there are third party dialers but I have not fount a free one yet.

I recently purchased O2XDA Atom and am disappointted with the following:

    1. The touch screen does not register when clicked on the first time. One needs to click on twice most of the times.
    2. Slow in opening any application. Take on average 5-15 seconds before the unit reacts.
    3. Volume on the bluetooth phone set (motorola) even when set to the max is low. Mobile function sucks.
    4. Constantly locks up and requires soft reset.
    5. Phone rings, there is a long delay between phone rings. Very easy to miss calls.

I am seriously thinking of replacing this unit. I have in the past used iPaq and never had any of this problem.

Crud absolute crud. I hate this phone so much i put it back in the box 5 mins ago and decided to revert to my old Nokia 6610. It is so full of bugs its lucky i didnt take a mallet to it.

Reception is so bad im tired of hearing "are you there" or "can you repeat that" when i they ask me to repeat is say "Dont buy a Atom!!"

pissed off and annoyed that some smart japs decided to rush this garbage to market before testing it.

I have done a side by side comparison with the Atom and my Nokia and the reception on the ATOM is all over the place The Nokia stays full strength . The only thing the ATOM is good for is to play solitaire...

Now if I could only get me money back.

    Just hope nothing goes wrong.
Purchasing an O2 on 27th Feb and receiving in March, it worked to a fashion, with dropouts, poor sound culminating in a phone failure.
I sent the phone in for repairs on 10 April, my reply, awaiting parts, what parts? THE MAIN BOARD!!!!!!.
It has been 4 weeks and still no idea when I will be able to use this machine.
I now am in the uncomfortable position of having to purchase another PDA with integrated phone, the support from O2, silence.
When some time in the future I may see this XDA, I’m not holding my breath, I will have to sell this machine, to try and recover some of my losses, be assure I will place a full history of the problems.
I have lost a lot of money and will have to pay out the same amount for a competitors devise.
If you are thinking of purchasing one of these devises, think very carefully.

Phone Function Anonymous -- 11/06/06 (in reply to #120127164)

The phone function is appauling. By the time the atom realises that you have hit the answer button it has hung up. I thought that Microsoft 5.0 would fix this problem but it has not. In a noisy room or on the road it is almost impossible to hear your caller....give it a wide berth.

O2 XDA ATOM AND THE BOOK OF STORIES Anonymous -- 16/01/06

I was one of the first to get a 02 xda atom on the 24-12-05. I have been with optus for about a year ( just to let you know reception never has been a problem). With 02 XDA ATOM i have logged 17 support calls each for different problem. Its a Peice of **** thats made to fool people and rob money off of em. Not one feature in it is good.

    1. Phones reception doesnt work. It drops and goes operation failed and takes atleast about 35-50 seconds to reconnect.

    2. software is so slow. everything is slow and takes time.

    3. MMS opeartions is buggy.

    4. Phone goes to sleep mode and thats it u wont receive calls.

    5. phones is in active status and your calls get diverted to voice mail. u wont even see a missed call. its as if u got a phone thats turned off.

    6. every program u opened is in background and the previous option "running programs" from xda mini is no more. so you have to brwose thru menus to kill programs each time or better yet - microsoft asked me to buy SPB plus coz they reckon keeping the programs runnin in background is a option ( wot da.....)

    6. camera takes about 50 secodns to coem to foreground and takes grainiest pictures i ever saw.

and the list goes on. if i were you i wouldnt get this phone every and would rather let every friend of yours know thats its not worth it.

I also had the sim card reader fail on me exactly a year after i brought it so it was out of warranty and i have also had the phone turn off on me alot of times and some times it will not turn back on for a couple of hrs or even days. oh and the usb output failed. all within 13 months of getting the stupid thing. cost me nearly $400 to fix and not sure if it even going 2 work. nvr getting another o2 again.

You need at least ROM 20060105B1WWE Mark McBoon -- 18/01/06

The ROM level that the O2 Atom ships with (20051129B2) is terrible and makes the whole device useless.

You need to upgrade to ROM 20060105B1WWE before this PDA/phone actually works (and it does work very well).

You need to register your device with the 02 asia pacific support site. You can then download the latest ROM. Be careful and back up all data as the ROM upgrade wipes your device back to factory defaults. I have the latest ROM and still have lots of issues such as lock ups, poor reception, java doesnt work, poor battery life, have to reset to make phone calls on vodaphone, wifi is poor. It's even reset itself and lost all information/data!! If you ask me this device is a lemon!

for those who is considering, my advice is not to buy the o2 atom... Ronnie Ong -- 21/01/06

    problems:
    1. you have to tap a few time before you get a response.
    2. You tap something but it gives you other.
    3. Can not change the alarm clock sound. The default sound is too soft.
    4. The alarm clock as well as the alarm in the media plus either don't trigger or trigger at wrong time. I was late for work a few time because of this!
    4. It is slow.
    5. It turn on by itself for no reason.
    6. Screen went black out and requires reset.

    Conclusion: regret buying.

I have the Atom o2 and all the problems you talk of don't exist.

You can change the Alarm tone to anything you want in WAV format. The sample rate must be 11000 hz and in mono. If your audio savy then its an easy task.

having your atom turn on or off by itself is not possible. Just edit the settings and your problems will dissappear.

This phone is for the very computer literate. If you have problems with Hi tech gadgets, then you wont be able to get the full use out of a pocket PC.

The Atom is cool and works fantastic. I still to this day have not ever bought a gadget that didn't have some working out.

Remember all this technology is still made by humans, who arn't perfect, so why would the technology be perfect also.

One tap is all it takes for my apps to work.

I recently purchased the mighty o2 xda atom. Other work colleagues use o2 xda and swear by them.

My time with the atom has been dissapointing. Apart from the unit being sluggish I have found it to be unreliable. I have downloaded the latest ROM upgrades and patches and still suffer from the unit powering itself OFF.

When I go to turn the unit back on it, it requests my pin and when it finally boots up the date resets to 09 may 2005. This is easily fixed by adjusting or resync but annoying. Reception is poor & the ringer is quiet also.

I have returned the unit to the retailer I purchased it from on the 20 MAR 2006 (HARVEY NORMAN FRANCHISE). They have forwarded it for repair. I dare say it will be in repair and transit for longer than I have so far owned it.

I fear that when it returns it will be no better but none the less look forward to being able to harness the full power of the "mighty??" atom.

    O2 XDA Atom - A very bad product Danny -- 10/04/06

    I thought I was upgrading from the old 02 XDA mini - WRONG....I cal this a down-grade.
    1. It is slower in some cases.
    2. Tapping on answer when the phone rings does not work at times and you end up missing calls.
    3. Camera is useless and often causes the product to hang.
    4. The alarm timers don't work on mine either.
What a waste of money...I'm going back to my 02 XDA! Never again will I buy this brand of product.

    upgraded O2 ATOM Nick G -- 25/04/06

Hi, bought my O2 ATOM last Sat. (22/04/06) IT came the JAN 06 firmware upgrade. I DLed the latest FW & camera patch from the O2 site and upgraded the unit. No issues what so ever. Camera works fine. even photo taken in the dark after the upgrade. i've installed many SW on it, including mNotes, SPB pocket plus. WiFi and Blue connectivity perfect. Used Bluetooth both with blueant x3 headset and Notebook. WiFi connection with Netgear WGU624 wifi router. I must warn u, the O2 ATOM is not a device for SMART phone, beginners.

    O2 Atom sucks Anonymous -- 29/04/06

A less than $100 handphone can work better than this stupid >$1000 rubbish.

I'm tired of even looking at this garbage. These O2 guys boast about how advance and feature-rich the Atom is and launch them without testing it. This is cheating.

The stupid ROM update caused the menu option to turn on the speaker phone disabled all the time and the service center guy tell me it is like that and they can't do anything.

DON'T EVER BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE!!!

I have bought Qtek 9100 and want to sell the Atom away...

    GPS + O2 ATOM Anonymous -- 13/05/06

I bought iPAQ Navigation System gps receiver for my atom. Had difficulties trying to pair the receiver with atom thru bluetooth. Found some helpful advise from online forum: gps hardware must be at com port 7 and software at com port 6. It works after that. Was surprised how well they worked together. At first after pairing and installation of Spore map, nothing happens and only a static map was displayed. When I drove out on the road however, I was surprised to hear voice directing me to turn, etc. I have set destination to my working place, and the GPS was trying to guide me to the correct path. Am very plsed with the gps and atom.

Since the new ROM update the Atom is solid and I love it. I even have full access to all my cable channels via a slingbox. The only problem I have is when I use the charger in my car it doesn't charge my battery. Does anyone else have this problem? The charger powers my unit but does not add to the charge percentage?

Will NEVER buy another O2 again !! Anonymous -- 04/07/06

    HOLD YOUR PURCHASES!!
I just brought my O2 Atom, and it is giving out this unbearable high frequency static noise from top part of the phone as soon as the screen is turned on. And O2 does not have an instance refund/exchange policy, you will have to post the faulty phone to them for 3 weeks and pray hard!!

Screen makes high pitch noise Anonymous -- 01/08/06 (in reply to #120137109)

Looks like the most recent O2 atoms have a new fault, I have just returned my first one after two problems, the battery kept draining after about 18 hours, O2 advised me this was a fault and to send it back for replacement, two days later i experienced a high pitch Buzz, Optus replaced the unit after two weeks, Just finished charging the new unit after a rom update and it worked for about 30 min, Buz is back, sending it back again. NO MORE O2's. BTW, you can longer buy accessories from the O@ website, I dont know where that leaves australian customers.

3rd Atom and I'm Giving up Anonymous -- 27/09/06 (in reply to #120137109)

I am on my third Atom now and I'm giving up it. The first unit was glitchy, two weeks later the second did a really good impression of a brick. After sending it in and waiting two months i recieved a replacement which is suffering from the infamous squeel and an annoying screen shudder. I think i'm going to switch to the HP rw6828 which appears to be the same device, only manufatured correctly...

Pity for you! Mine's working great! Anonymous -- 22/07/06

Maybe you're one of the unlucky few who got those problems. Just like any other products, no phone is perfect. Sorry, for you but mine's working great and never have even a slightest regret.

XDA Atom is a disaster Paul McGowan -- 20/09/06 (in reply to #120138526)

I bought my atom in April. The screen doesnt work outdoors, the phone regularly hangs, the software does not handle active switching between contacts and calender, and did I mention that the phone hangs regularly. Finally my IT team have tried every known method to get the device to sync properly with my pc but to no avail after 6 hours it hangs....such great hopes dashed. Anybody have a recommendation for a stable device with similar functions.

Mine's working great. Conclusion: BEST BUY! Anonymous -- 22/07/06

Atom is very solid in form and performance. From simple task to wi-fi. No problem with me, especially with all those upgrades (makes me don't regret in buying, support is very good).
Been using this for half a year already, no problem!

Been using this superb gadget for half a year and everything's working great. I really love all the features in the phone. And i'm most happy with the support team of O2, makes me not regret in buying this. O2 XDA atom is just like having a computer in the palm of your hand plus a phone in it. Isn't that great?

    The Atom Ian K -- 09/08/06

When I first started using the Atom in January, I had the same opinions as many people previously.

Slow performance, bad camera, crashing OS and applications.

After the first ROM update came out, some of the issues became better - they didn't disappear, they just got better.

It's not August and I've just applied the third ROM update and I have to say that a lot of the issues have disappeared. I have not had a single failure, and everyhting works fine.

I'm sure that future updates will really bring out the phone's potential. It's just a shame it couldn't start out like this.

Worst 02 phone ever, only syncs once then you have to delete the partnership and start again to sync.... what's the point of a windows phone that wont sync!!!!!

Have spoken to four others with the same fault.

They replaced the first one due to may faults.... but after 6 weeks of wrngling they wont refund and state they will eventually replace this one for annother!!!

    O2 Atom won't install - Code 10 Nato -- 28/01/07

My first post I hope this is right.
My friend's 02 Atom XDA won't install properly. When plug it in Windows detects it as a Windows Mobile device, then says error starting device, Code 10 (in device manager).
Have tried reinstalling cd, updating driver, uninstalling all USB root ports, formatting PC.
The PC in question is an IBM Thinkpad R32 w XP Pro SP2.
Can't update drivers as it seems to be just using inbuilt Windows drivers.
Device works fine on other computers.
    Any ideas?

    O2 XDA Atom - What a crap device Pete -- 06/06/07

    O2 Atom Rubbish Anonymous -- 30/07/07

Purchase this clunker 15 months ago. Have now got a dead unit absolute crap. This phone would have to have a soft boot every few days or would just not register calls. Now, the battery won't charge. Purchased a new battery (from ebay as no retailers keep them) and upgraded to the latest ROM. Now, phone won't charge. It says it is charging, but battery meter decreasing. Won't even boot up when plugged into USB. Absolute rubbish For a $1100 phone. Why is the warranty only 12/12? Also if I send the phone to Qld what do I use in the meantime. People should petition retailers not to stock any of O2s stuff. Are the Imate PDA phones any better? Have seen some bad reviews re JasJam

    O2 Atom - Not Satisfied Anonymous -- 07/09/07

    Hi,
I have been using O2 Atom for 2 months now. I seem to be lucky not to have most of the problems as mentioned by others, but a peculiar one.

My phone sometimes fails to register in the GSM network. Tried Automatic and Manual scanning too. But get an error message "Disconnect data connection and try again later". But there is no data connection that is currently connected. Not sure when this works and when it doesnt. Sometimes on Reset, it works, unfortunately this time after resetting 5 times, theres no use.

Not sure how to go forward. Any suggestiions pls???

Overall, probably I would have been happy with another brand compared to O2

    Good Luck Minnow -- 12/10/09

You would have better luck using two tin cans and a piece of string communicating than this piece of shart. Seriously. As for speed, if i want computing speed and power, i would be better dusting off the ol c64 and loading a tape game, i'd be waiting less time than waiting for the O2 camera function to start. Avoid at all costs
