MMS to fly across the Tasman

Vodafone users will be able to send multi-media messages across the Tasman in September following a deal with Ericsson.

Multi-Media Messaging Services (MMS) is a universally accepted standard that allows users of MMS enabled mobile phones to send and receive messages with formatted text, photographic images, and audio and visual clips. Messages can also be sent to e-mail addresses.

-In New Zealand the MMS market is as big as text," Vodafone spokesperson Sarah McGovern told ZDNet Australia.

Ericsson will install and integrate a push-proxy Gateway (PPG) into Vodafone's current network, with the platform to be situated in Auckland and servicing both New Zealand and Australia.

"Our strategic partnership with Vodafone will bring text and picture messaging to life, it will only be a few months before we can send any-length TXT and music clips, with colour pictures, animations, audio and video clips from MMS enabled mobiles to MMS enabled mobiles. We look forward to ensuring MMS is a great success in Australia and New Zealand," said Neil Livingston, General Manager of Vodafone Account for Ericsson New Zealand in a press release.
