T20s

The age-old adage that size doesn't matter was quickly proven false when it comes to mobile phones. In the past five years, they've become increasingly compact and lightweight, without compromising on functionality.

In this tradition comes the T20s WAP phone from Ericsson, the latest addition to its mobile phone family and a product release that offers virtually everything someone on the go could ever need.

Customisable is probably the best word to use when describing the functionality of the T20s. Rather than just issuing the stock-standard features of its competitors, Ericsson have given the user the opportunity to tailor the phone's functions to suit themselves.

In the text messaging sections, for example, it incorporates templates that allow you to set up standard messages which can be sent out to both individuals and pre-determined groups - an option that is bound to save time for those of us who have become increasingly reliant on text message communication.

But possibly the best user-specific function on the T20s is its ability to recognise voice labels. In just a few quick steps, the user can set-up voice-activated dialling, a service this reviewer found particularly appealing despite a couple of late night, drunken failures when trying to slur the word "taxi" in a noisy pub.

One of the few drawbacks to the T20s's size is its miniature keypad, which makes typing text messages a bit of an ordeal. Firstly, there's the obvious typos that arise when an interfaceis so significantly smaller than the user's fingers. Also, the colour-coded buttons are a little tough to identify in poorly-lit surrounds, a problem not alleviated by keypad backlighting that could use some increased wattage.

These minor drawbacks aside, the T20s is one hell of a funky little phone. It has provisions for attachable MP3 players and Bluetooth headsets, features the usual alarm clock, stopwatch and calculator functions and also houses some very cool games with surprisingly good graphics.

All-in-all, while the T20s's size does have a minor impact on its usability, it's added extras more than compensate, and should make this a must have for those who value owning the latest and greatest in mobile phone technology.
