Five more cool phones you can't have

Once more, it's time to look wistfully overseas at the best phones you just can't get in Australia.

In this part of the world, we often hear about the Nokias, Motorolas and Samsungs. We often forget there are other phone makers out there that offer equally cool products. Unfortunately, their handsets may never make it to our shores for various reasons, such as incompatible networks to limited distribution partnerships.

To see more cool phones that you can't have, check out our previous feature.

1. LG KH5000
Availability: South Korea
The LG KH5000 has consistently received accolades for its amazing design. In fact, earlier this year, it won the Presidential Award at the 2002 Good Design (GD) Awards organized by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion. What catches the eye is its 270-degree rotating LCD screen. This makes it easier for users to take pictures with the integrated camera, which is positioned at the end of the clamshell hinge.

2.Mitsubishi J-D06 Graphica
Availability: Japan
The futuristic-looking J-D06 is a new phone released by Japan's mobile operator J-Phone. Weighing 97g, it offers a built-in digital camera, polyphony as well as wireless Java. Furthermore, the phone is capable of the Sha-mail service, which allows images to be sent via email to other phones and desktops.

3.Wildseed Smart Skin
Availability: US
US-based software company Wildseed is set to launch the Smart Skin--faceplates that snap onto compatible handsets. Containing a pre- programmed smart card, the Smart Skin automatically deploys a theme that changes the user interface and applications of the phone. Handsets which harness Intel processors will be able to accommodate a Nintendo Game Boy Color game.

4.OKWAP 166
Availability: Taiwan
Taiwan's OKWAP remains one of our favorite small-time manufacturers. The previous i108 impressed us with its wealth of features, including a color screen and polyphony. The 166 puts that in a dual-screen clamshell form factor and also includes General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).

5. Handspring Treo 300
Availability: North America
The Handspring Treo 300, cosmetically similar to the Treo 270, was released in August specially for US operator Sprint's 3G network. This PDA-phone makes a perfect match with high-speed mobile data services, allowing for a smooth wireless Internet experience.
