Siemens M35i

The rugged cousin to the C35i, Siemens' M35i is the mobile phone for the outdoor enthusiast. Encased in a rubbery material, the M35i's 125 gram, 118 x 46 x 21mm chasis boasts improved water, shock and dust resistance, with no obtrusive antenna to further impede movement.

The M35i (available in basic black and hurricane yellow) provides peace of mind for those who work in hazardous environments but durability comes at a price. The rubber casing provides excellent grip but it is also more likely to stain and absorb odours when constantly exposed to persipiration.

Another inconvenience the rubber design is that removal of the battery cover can only be done with a coin or screwdriver. Extended use will most likely wear out the screw, eventually rendering the battery cover irremovable.

The M35i is a dual band phone has a user-friendly interface and there are no obvious deficiencies in its feature set. It has as WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser, predictive text input, ringtone melody composer, appointment book, shortcut reminders, voice dialling, alarm, world clock, currency converters and a 100-entry phonebook. The M35i also offers the Calling Faces feature that tags representative bitmaps to selected names within the phonebook, flashing the assigned picture when that person calls. Talktime for the phone is up to six hours and standby time is about 220 hours. Reception tests clear on the networks as well.

The use of nickel hydride batteries and an annoyingly small 5-line display made for some complaints, but otherwise, the M35i is on the money for its outdoor readiness and useful features.
