The Altec Lansing ADA880 takes a different approach to multichannel playback than the Cambridge SoundWorks DTT2500 does. At first glance, the ada880 looks like a standard three-piece stereo model. But when you're playing multichannel source material, the top half of each satellite can be snapped off and converted into a rear surround speaker. The system also includes a terrific wireless hand-held remote and an integrated decoder that detects Dolby Digital or Pro Logic signals at its S/PDIF input jack.
The ADA880's output quality is very good. The system is capable of fairly high volume levels, and its massive 8-inch subwoofer driver and 40-watt amp pump out deep, powerful bass. But the ada880 can't match the dtt2500's sparkling high end, pinpoint imaging, and superb low-end detail. Despite its clever design, the ada880 finishes a nose behind the dtt2500 in sound quality and value. It's a fine piece of equipment, but we can't recommend it with enthusiasm when you can pick up a true 5.1 system with better sound for less money.
