Japan-based electronics giant Sony will soon introduce what it claims to be the word's first dual-format home DVD recorder.
The Sony RDR-GX7 will be the only home DVD recorder that supports the DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-R recording formats, the company claimed in a statement.
While multi-format recordings have been available as computer drives for some time, Sony's latest gadget is one of the first to have this feature in a home entertainment device.
Most home DVD recorders, like Philip's DVDR 890, can only write to recordable discs in either the DVD-RW or DVD+RW format. Besides allowing for dual-format recording, Sony's new gadget is also compatible with CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs.
It sports the usual audio and video ports and includes Sony's iLink, a version of the IEEE 1394 or FireWire interface which enables high- speed file transfers between the recorder and other devices such as digital video cameras.
The RDR-GX7 will be available overseas this May in at a price of US$800 (about AU$1,295). Sony representatives said that it should be available in Australia some time in the second half of the year with an expected RRP somewhere above AU$1,500.
