If you think that Samsung's new DVD-V5000 player is just another multi-function all-in-one device that will probably not take off, you may be in for a big surprise.
Unlike the earlier VCD+VCR combo players that were too expensive and limited in features, the latest DVD+VCR player from Samsung not only has all the standard features that can be found on standalone DVD players and VCRs, it has additional functions such as picture zoom and direct DVD/VCD-to-video tape recording. And best of all, at AU$799 it is also very affordable.
Compact size
The first thing about the Samsung player that caught our attention is its size. For a DVD player that has a VCR built-in, we'd expected it to be bigger than the average machine. However, the DVD-V5000 is surprisingly compact, and its dark metallic silver casing distinguishes it from the champagne gold of most players.
Setting up the DVD-VCR player was pretty straightforward, thanks to the included instruction manual that was clear and easy to understand. There were basically only three connections: The three RCA (the red, white and yellow plugs) to the TV, the coaxial cable for the antenna, and the power plug. Once connected, we switched on the player, ran the automatic station preset function and the player was ready for use. All in all, we only took about seven minutes to install the player.
Easy-to-use interface
While most combo players can have a confusing array of buttons for various functions, the Samsung player is surprisingly user-friendly. Its clever use of a minimum set of buttons, intuitive interface and responsive remote control makes it easy for anyone to get familiar with the player in a short time.
As there is only one set of playback buttons for both the DVD and VCR, you'll have to hit a button to switch control between the two devices.
DVD/VCD playback
The Samsung DVD-V5000 comes with all the standard features of a DVD player. On top of the normal playback, audio and subtitle functions, the player has a picture zoom option that lets you enlarge the picture up to 4x (2x for VCDs) during playback.
We find the 2x fast forward function quite useful for skipping the boring parts of a film, as it allows viewing of video discs in smooth motion video, instead of selected key frames in the higher speed (4x, 8x, 16x and 32x) forward play modes. The resume function comes in handy when you stop a movie and want to continue from there.
Overall, the image quality is decent and the DVD menu's graphical user interface, which can only be activated through the remote control unit, is relatively easy to use. Playback of both Region 1 and 3 discs went smoothly.
Video recording
Like all other multi-system VCRs, the DVD-V5000 supports multiple video formats such as NTSC and PAL, and can play (though not record) in SuperVHS mode. It has a programmable timer recording function, for up to one month in advance and up to a maximum of six programs.
You can choose to record in either standard play or long play mode, which doubles the recording time of a tape. Most impressive, though, is the built-in six-head hi-fi stereo system, which ensured high quality in both video capture and playback.
Multi-tasking
The Samsung DVD-V5000 is more than just a DVD and VCR combo player. We were amazed at how easy it is to copy or "dub" a DVD/VCD onto a video cassette. You don't need cables or a complicated setup. Just insert the DVD/VCD and the blank tape and press the "Copy" button. Best part is, you can watch a broadcast channel while dubbing is in progress. Alternatively, while you are recording a broadcast channel, you can also enjoy DVD playback. High-speed dubbing is not possible.
A worthwhile investment if...
For those of you who are looking for a DVD player as well as a VCR, the Samsung DVD-V5000 is a good choice, because it's easy to setup and saves half the home entertainment space in your living room.
