LG DR4812W DVD Recorder

LG DR4812W LG's inexpensive DVD recorder makes a great entry point for anyone pondering upgrading from the humble family VCR. Read our Australian review.

LG's DR4812W lacks the hard drive recording facilities of more costly DVD recorders, but if you're after a simple and relatively inexpensive unit for your day to day recording activities, it's a hard unit to look past. It's capable of recording to all of the major DVD recording formats, supports recording up to six hours on a single disc and has a number of features that'll appeal to hardcore TV junkies.

Design
At 69mm, LG claims that the DR4812W is the slimmest recorder in the world, but otherwise it's physically what we've come to expect from DVD recorders -- slightly larger units than their playback brethren with an emphasis on connection ports everywhere you choose to look. The DR4812W sports a rather pedestrian front facing that's unlikely to surprise anyone, but to be fair, it's not likely to annoy anyone either. The bottom mirrored section of the DR4812W attaches magnetically and hides a variety of additional buttons and a front secondary set of inputs, ideal for attaching digital cameras and video game consoles. On the back you'll find connections for component, digital and s-video in and out, so there's practically no home setup that the DR4812W couldn't be integrated into. The DR4812W's remote is amongst the longest we've ever seen on any product; that's in part to give it additional function buttons, and it does make it rather hard to lose. On the flip side, it also makes it rather hard to place inconspicuously amongst your home theatre setup, if that's important to you. As with most major home theatre makers, the remote will integrate with compatible LG televisions to spare on the clutter of having multiple remotes around the house.

Features
The DR4812W's big hook is that it's a multi-format DVD recorder, meaning you can pop any of the most common types of DVD recordable media into it and just start recording, without having to worry about whether it's plus or minus. One small catch here -- the DR4812W doesn't support the much less common DVD-RAM media. Depending on your choice of media, you'll also have a number of recording options open to you -- broadly speaking, the write-once plus and minus media is the least flexible, moving up in options with -RW media and into the best possible option choices with +RW media. The DR4812W supports multiple recording modes, ranging from 1 hour at best possible quality on a 4.7GB disc up to six hours, so there are few recordable events you shouldn't be able to catch with this versatile little system -- although the upcoming Olympic games might be a bit of a challenge. It took us some time to get to grips with the system's remote, mainly because most of the buttons aside from the very regular playback buttons are all the same size -- including the record button. That means it takes a little bit of visual checking to make sure you're hitting the right button, rather than just being able to 'feel' where the correct choice is. One feature on the remote sure to appeal to hard core couch potatoes is instant skip button, which steps forward in a recording exactly 15 seconds -- hit that a couple of times and you won't even notice any ad breaks in recorded TV broadcasts. We're sure that TV executives would be less thrilled with that button, but from the consumer side it's a bit of a godsend.

Performance
In playback terms the DR4812W's a perfectly capable unit, but at this stage of DVD development, we'd pretty much put that as a given. Recording to a variety of media we had few complaints. You'll certainly notice the compression at the highest rates, especially for any broadcast involving lots of action, but with single -R/+R discs going for only a couple of dollars each these days, you'll probably not need to go to the full compression extremes all that often. One catch we did find -- and it's not terribly well covered in the DR4812W's manual -- is that everything but DVD+RW media needs to be finalised within the player before it'll be readable in other DVD players. That's a process that  took less than a minute each time we tested with it, but without doing so you'll be left scratching your head wondering if you've just created an expensive coaster. As with most DVD recorders, the DR4812W is Macrovision enabled.

The DR4812W's isn't the absolute cutting edge in DVD recorders -- it can't do the timeskipping tricks that hard drive enabled players can, for a start -- but what it is is a great introduction to DVD recorders; it's capable and easy enough to use with multiple media formats, as well as relatively inexpensive -- at the time of writing it was eminently possible to pick up the AU$999 listed DR4812W for around AU$800 at a number of retailers.

I've personally got one of these at home (in addition to reviewing it) and I've not hit any of the problems that are being bandied around here -- I've paused during recording to +R discs, not had sound drop out or anything of the sort. It is somewhat odd on finalising +RW discs, but that's solvable for me with the use of a backup PC burner.

From the sound of it, though, there is an issue with earlier units that bears investigating. More soon.

I have used a heap of blank discs trying different methods, shorter pause time, 2 or 3 pauses during ads etc and still no go. I was told that you can only pause for 3 mins, I tried this and it is not so. I was also told to use the stop function during ads. The hand book says I can pause but it will not. The hand book does not give a time limit for pausing at all.

Very annoying. If LG can't help me it's gone.

I would suspect most of the bad reviews about this recorder are from people that havent read their manuals properly, it takes a bit of time for newbies to get a grasp of the diffrent formats ie. + - also using vr or video mode and the finalizing process.

I don't see how this can be a result of not reading the manual. When it works it's great, but why do LG have to treat their customers with such contempt?

    INCOMPATABILITY.
I have recently purchased the LG DR4812W DVD Recorder which I have connected to a Samsung DVD-VCR Model (DVD-V70) Tape reader/recorder + DVD player and a Panasonic TV. When I play a VHS tape and record to a DVD-R disk in the DVD recorder and monitor it on my TV I am unable to adjust the tracking. The picture is breaking up. This also applies to the recorded disk. As a result I have had to throw away several DVD-R disks. It would seem that my Samsung DVD-VCR is not compatible with this DVD recorder. This is not due to any tape copy protection as I have the same result with a VHS tape that does not have any copy protection. I wish someone had told me about this DVD recorder not being compatible with some types of DVD-VCR players at the time of purchase. The retailer is now saying I need a different DVD-VCR player. Because of this problem a new DVD-VCR Player is going to cost me approx. $300 + all the disks I have had to throw away. I suggest a warning about this incompatibility be put on the outside of the LG DR4812W DVD Recorder box in very large letters and the retailer make this fact known to the purchaser. Not a happy chappy!!

It has been to the (Gold!) warranty agent twice - a total of 6 weeks without the unit! The 1st time they replaced the whole loader mechanism because they could not even get a disk to play.. the second time they reloaded the firmware.. still the unit failed within minutes of bringing it home. Upon taking it back the 3rd time, the warranty agent told me there was nothing more they could do and to contact LG direct. With this I received about as much response as did most others here! - NONE!
This unit is now in the hands of Consumer Affairs for supplying a product "Not fit for purpose"
LG are not getting away with this..

Absolutely Disgusted considering the unit cost $AU800.

Total usage time in my house since AUG04.. about 30mins.. Great Investment!!

What is the status on Consumer Affairs?Chris Thomas -- 25/08/05 (in reply to #120114921)

    Edward-

What result, if any have you had regarding your failed unit?

Bought LG DR4812W on 19March05 and returned it 20March05. The audio kept dropping out, the disc icon was greyed out so I could not select it and it didn't recognise the disk after formatting it so formatted again and again. Very disappointing. Anonymous -- 25/03/05

Now have Hitachi DV-RX7000A and it appears to be just what I needed and less expensive.

Do you really think that all units are faulty? do you not think that it is possible that it is a batch that are not good. Maybe you should investigate further. I have had non with mine.....

LG Shill questions the truthKradak Thomas -- 25/08/05 (in reply to #120120033)

Who else but an LG salesman/investor/shill could deny that these people have had problems with their LG DVD recorders. I mean, I'm a faithful guy, but I've just suffered a catastrophic failure of my unit *FOR NO APPARENT REASON*. Okay, maybe the fact is, the device has just "passed" its one-year lifespan...

I'm getting no response from the unit, save for a repeating "please wait" signal and the ability to power on and off. Nothing else.

My question is this: Is there any recourse like a class action suit down here? (I'm in Sydney)

Legal Action against LGJohn Tate -- 01/10/05 (in reply to #120120391)

It would appear that LG is selling DVD products that simply do not work. As I understand, this is against the law in Australia and the Dept of Fair Trading should be advised.

I bought this machine about 5 hours ago - all it does is turn on and off, display a "Please Wait" signal and opens and closes the DVD drawer. Tomorrow it goes back to the seller. After reading all the bad reviews I think it's a dud. I'll look around for something else....

    LG RH4940W DVD RecorderJohn Tate -- 01/10/05

I am very disappointed with the poor operation of my LG DVD Recorder model RH4940W which I purchased on 9/12/04. Initially, I discovered that the sound was out of synchronisation with the voice when recording DVDs and recording to the hard drive. A software upgrade was performed by Kiama TV & Video Service which I assume would fix the problem. Initially, the unit was working OK but now during Time Shift, the recorded video will stop then start again and the sound is out of synchronisation with the picture. I either have a lemon DVD recorder or else the product is not doing what it is claimed to do. Unless the Unit can be fixed or replaced, I have asked for a full refund of the purchase price of $1200. If the response from LG is not satisfactory I will be going to the Fair Trading Department as LG is selling a product which does not work.

Watching another channel while recordingAnonymous -- 07/11/05

Can anyone tell me why I cannot watch another channel while recoring with this unit? Am I just a dummy or is it not possible?

Watching one channel while recording anotherRichard Pillay -- 20/11/05

I don't know the unit you have, so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

The reason you can't record one channel while watching another, is that most units have only one receiver, which is being used for the channel you are recording. What you want to do is record using the unit, while using the TV's receiver to watch another channel.

Got the same problemAnonymous -- 26/01/06

I'm in Sydney too. My LG kept dying whilst recording. Now it only reads CDs NOT DVDs. This machine has a bad history and they know it. I'm lodging a complaint with consumer affaris that they knowingly sold a defective product and there should have been a product recall. You should do the same as all claims are investigated and if enough people lodge a claim then consumer affairs will act.

    clean the lense!Anonymous -- 14/07/06 (in reply to #120131870)

Troubles with this machine seem to go away once the disc lense in cleaned. They sell these lense cleaner cds at computer stores. Worth a try.
Just like old vcrs needed cleaning these do as well.
Also switch off power when not in use, they can overheat and reject dvds.
After rental dvds - always clean the lense!!
It works for mine. Also you can make it region free by pressing '0' seven times WHILE the disc tray is open.
PS: try to only use DVD+RW for recording. -RW discs are crap and will only give you trouble.

Run for your lifeAnonymous -- 13/04/06

I bought a LG DR4812W about 11 months ago. It was always a little tempramental, it use to freeze every now and again. But it would do verything it was meant to, play dvds, record proeprly. And then it just flipped out. It stopped loading any type of disk, it constantly froze, it would not record at all. When it would load a regualr disk it would pause, you could not use scene selection, the picture would scrable. Not exactly 400 bucks worth!

IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE AND IT IS NOT PLAYING UP OR IT IS BUT IT IS UNDER WARRANTY, CUT YOUR LOSSES NOW!!! IF YOU CAN GET A REFUND GET IT,IF YOU CAN AN EXCHANGE GET IT. IF YOU CAN'T DO THAT JUST SELL IT NOW FOR WHATEVER YOU CAN GET, IF ITS NOT WORKING AND UNDER WARRANTY THEN GET IT FIXED AND SELL IT.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT/CAN'T GET RID OF IT.

    1. WHEN RECORDING, ONLY USE DVD+R/RW, NEVER USE DVD-R/R. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE, TRY A FEW DIFFERENT BRANDS OF DISKS, SONY SEEMS TO WORK THE BEST, STEAR CLEAR OF TDK OR IMATION.

    2. DON'T LEAVE IT TURNED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME - MORE THAN A COUPLE OF HOURS - BECAUSE IT OVERHEATS AND THEN IT FREEZES AND DOESN'T RECORD.

    3. IF YOU'R PLANING TO TAPE SOMETHING BE SURE TO TURN YOU DVD OFF FOR ATY LEAST A HALF HOUR BEFORE. WHEN OTS HAS BEEN ON FOR TWO LONG IT OVERHEATS AND THINKS YOU'R TRYING TO PIRATE A DVD, SO WHEN YOU TRY AND REOCRD IT WILL 'ILLEGAL OPERATION, CAN NOT RECORD.

    MOST IMPORTNAT OF ALL

    4. MY RECORDER GOT TO THE STAGE RECENTLY WHERE IT WOULOD NOT RECORD, WOULD NOT LOAD ANY TYPE OF DISK, COULDN'T USE SCENE SELECTIONS AND SO ON. EFFECTIVELY IT WOULDN'T WORK. I BOUGHT A LENSE CLEANING CD. I HAD TO US IT ABOUT 7 TIMES, BUT ONCE I HAD THE RECORDER STARED WORKING AGAIN. NOW IT LOADS QUICKLY, PLAYS ANYTHING, RECORDS. I THINK THE DESIGN OF THE DISK TRAY PULLS HEAPS OF DUST ONTO THE LENSE, SO KEEP CLEANING!!! THERE ARE STILL INBUILT SYSTEM ERRORS THAT THIS WONT FIX, BUT IN GENERAL THIS SEEMS TO RESTORE IT TO ITS TEMPREMNTAL OPERATIONAL STATUS.

I don't beleive it. I've only had one of these units DR4812W for 3 Days.. Straight out of the box. Got myself familar with it. put in a blank +Rw. finalised it. Had a play. rec. etc etc.. preset it to record etc.. Went a away for the weekend. Go to use it.. nothing.. the Disc Draw won't open. The disc drive is spinning and attempting to access it.. Turned every thing off. and back on again.. Nothing.. I can't even select the Av or normal TV channels anymore... what a dud !! It's going straight back to the shop.. I wish I would have read these readers comments before hand.. darn !

I bought this unit, LG DR4812W two years ago, 2004. Since then, I have formatted, recorded, finalised and re-played about 180 DVD+R 4X disc with no problems !

Therefore, I think the problem is DO NOT used DVD Recordable X8 or X16 disc, they are not compatible ! ONLY used X4 disc.

You hit the nail on the head when you said that they were trying to drag it out to run you out of warranty. Our dvd recorder is useless and the TV took 4 months to fix and it was only that qucik becasue i threatened them with a newspaper editorial. Our replacement tv is now broken and we start the game again.

I am thinking of starting a class action and if anybody woudl be interested in adding their name and complaint to this, please let me knwo.

Had mine for quite a while, and had LOTS of problems with recording, either + or - discs. Now it's out of guarantee and I needed new discs but can't get either kind to initialize. Have spents HOURS trying EVERYTHING. Was ready to return discs bought from Tesco here, and now I don't know if it's them or the recorder. Oy vay!

    LG DVD Recorder DR4922Paul Chu -- 23/06/08

Bought this in Jan 2005 and generally had no real problem until recently while recording from old VHS tapes. After successfully recording two DVD-R disks, the machine began constantly dropping out while recording, usually freezing up displaying the recorded time; sometimes it stopped recording by itself and writes the disk up. If you continues to record on the same disk, the problem repeats itself. I have tried TDK, Hyundai and HP disks with the same problem. Would much appreciate any suggestions to fix this problem.

    LG RH298H DVD HDD RecorderAnonymous -- 04/02/09

Featureless junk. Avoid at all costs. The clumsy interface is just the beginning. When it's timer recording you can't do anything else with it. Nothing. And if it's not switched onto stand-by the timer recording doesn't start at all. Hopeless effort from LG and I'll have to think long and hard before ever even considering buying anything LG make if this is the standard.

I also have 250GB & 160GB Panasonic units that are 2 and 1 year old respectively and they leave this LG doorstop for dead.

I started buying LG appliances when they first come out and never had any problems. Now I would no have any LG crap in my house. lets see LG 42 HD plasma **** it self with in 3 months" had every board replaced", 50 DLP buzzed its head off from new could not watch at night unless the volume was loud, Dvd hard drive wont read any disks after 6 months, lg dish washer burning smell, stopped washing. another Lg dishwasher does not dry dishes ....LG Lame-Goods, crap customer service. The only thing LG items are good for is target practice and keeping techies in a job. F#*ck you LG.

    LG ProductsAnonymous -- 25/06/09

I experienced the same problems with the LG 4812 (couldn't format DVD-RW disc, freezes on formatting). Not only that, I also have problems with the LG mobile phone. I guess LG is exporting problem products all over the world because I am living Hong Kong.
