Without a doubt, one of the biggest stories of 2000 was the rise of
Napster and the continuing saga of MP3. Overnight, it seemed that
this "little encoding algorithm that could" had taken over the world
or, at the very least, had taken on the mega music corporations and
seemed to be winning. Despite the efforts of the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA) to regain control in the wake of
Napster, MP3.com, and the rising popularity of portable digital
audio players, it seems unlikely in the long run that it'll be able
to put the brakes on music downloading.
MP3 is just one of several digital audio formats widely used today.
And because the world of formats can sometimes be confusing, we
decided to give you the lowdown without too much technical jargon.
With digital audio looking more and more like it's here to stay, we
decided to examine MP3 and other encoding formats that are here
right now or just around the corner.
