Panasonic NV-DS25A DV Camera

Panasonic NV-DS25A DV Camera The NV-DS25A is the new digital video camera from Panasonic. The camera can shoot video on a mini DV cassette in normal or long play recording, as well as capture 200 still images on an 8MB MultiMedia card in economy mode (an optional 16MB MultiMedia card is available). And it is possible to record images from the MultiMedia card to the DV cassette.

The DS25A features a 2.5in 112,000-pixel LCD, along with a colour viewfinder. The clarity of the image through the LCD was superb, and the automatic exposure was quick, adjusting the light in an instant if the camera moved into different light conditions. It is, however, possible to switch to manual operation for functions such as focus, shutter speed, iris and white balance.

The camera also has a 20x optical zoom and 40x/400x digital zoom, which was nice and smooth. When we played back the recording, there was no jerking in the picture, thanks to the Super Image Stabiliser and 800,000-pixel CCD.

The zoom microphone on the DS25A produced an even sound, as it automatically adjusts to the zoom setting on the lens. The sound we heard during playback was incredible, because we selected 16-bit PCM (48kHz) stereo sound for two channels of DAT-level sound recording.

A surprising feature we discovered was O-Lux Night View for night recording. The motion sensor within the camera starts recording when it detects motion and stops ten seconds after motion has ceased to produce high-quality black and white images.

As you would expect, the DS25A comes equipped with 11 different special effects, most of which can be applied during recording, as well as playback. The inclusion of the PhotoShot button is great. We were able to record a still picture, together with sound for a full seven seconds. The built-in DV Input/Output is an IEEE 1394 standard terminal, and the Digital Still Picture Terminal provides PC connectivity through the computer's serial port.

The optional PC Connection Kit comes with a variety of software for importing, editing, and electronically moving still images. The battery was a convenient quick-charge, allowing us to start recording with only 15 minutes of charging.

There is a plethora of optional extras available for the DS25A, but we found the standard accessories more than adequate for general use. The camera is lightweight and, more importantly, easy to use. And with its price tag, it's pretty affordable as well.
