C-2100

Real photographers carry big bags full of lenses and film and stuff. Real photographers don't want to give up control of exposure and aperture settings to some silicon chip. Real photographers love to twist dials and poke buttons and fiddle with esoteric features. And real photographers are going to love the new 2.1 megapixel Olympus C-2100 Ultra Zoom camera because it gives them everything they want in a single, lightweight, compact digital camera. In fact, the camera is so easy to use and versatile that more casual users will like it, too.

The C-2100 resembles a traditional single-lens reflex (SLR) film camera, sleekly updated. You won't need a bag full of lenses with this camera, because its 38mm - 380mm (35mm equivalent) fixed zoom lens can handle everything from capturing a group portrait in a small room to bringing you right into the goal while you're standing at midfield. And don't worry about the extra latte you had before the game; digital image stabilization will give you a steady shot even at the maximum telephoto range.

Our jurors rated the C-2100's image quality above average, and placed it near the top of its class for print quality. In our indoor-lighting test image, there was a slight brown tint to some gray shades, and red shades seemed a bit too vivid. Flesh tones appeared warm and natural, however, and the colours were not oversaturated, as they sometimes are in digital photos. Our outdoor-lighting sample image was slightly strong on the magenta shades, but otherwise the colour balance was good, with excellent details in both highlights and shadows.
