The American manufacturer's latest duo of digital cameras have more in common than their looks. For starters, they both sport a large and bright 2.2-inch LCD. The photography giant, famous for coining the phrase "Kodak moments", has recently generated more noise with its lawsuit and investor dissensions more than its product lineup. However, today the manufacturer reminded us of its ability to produce capable wares as well. After deciding to move the company into the digital realm, Kodak has been busy hiring -- most notably -- Yusuke Kojima who's widely regarded as the father of Olympus' digicam family, and developing new products. The current DX line of its EasyShare system is a testament to this strategy.
Since the DX6490, the company's prosumer range has taken up a more distinct styling which features an SLR-inspired grip, renowned optics and generally more nimble performance. The freshly minted DX7440 is no exception and looks to retain that newfound status. Sporting a 4-megapixel sensor as well as a 4x Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon 4x optical lens, the latest digicam also looks to have the goods to go head-to-head with Canon's PowerShot A80 -- our Editors' Choice winner in the compact class.
Other pluses include an exhaustive selection of preprogrammed scene modes as well as a big, bright 2.2-inch LCD screen which should aid plenty in framing and composing your photos. On the downside, the 4x optics sports only a 33-132mm (35mm equivalent) focal range that enthusiasts may find a little narrow for wide-angle shots on landscapes. Users can expect to find the DX7440 retailing for a competitive AU$699.
In addition to the DX7440, Kodak Australia has also released the DX7630, an improved Kodak Ultima photo paper that's rated for 100 years, as well as a new-generation EasyShare printer dock. Sporting features similar to its older Printer Dock 6000, the refreshed unit adds the all-important PictBridge connectivity. This will allow the ameliorated dye-sublimation unit to be compatible with other PictBridge-enabled cameras. The latest printer dock is available immediately for AU$299.
