Zoom to the max, and snap!

PowerShot Pro 90IS

The most unique feature of Canon's PowerShot Pro 90IS is its 10x optical zoom. Equivalent to a 7-70mm lens on a traditional SLR camera, such zooming power touches upon new territory in the digital camera market.

Not only that, this latest model (around AU$2,799) comes with a Digital Teleconverter feature that lets you magnify the optical zoom by four times to achieve 40x zoom -- if you can stand the extra grain and digital noise. To stabilise the image at high zoom power, Canon has provided an optical image stabilisation (Image Stabilizer) feature to reduce motion blur and distortion.

Fit for the pros

Equipped with a 3.34 million pixel CCD, the Pro 90 machine offers the highest digital resolution in its class with 1,856 x 1,392 pixel photos, to withstand enlargement from 8" x10" and beyond. The camera also features 12 picture-taking modes to achieve flexibility previously confined to expensive analogue cameras. A varied-angle LCD monitor allows users to frame each scene with better precision and timing.

The device comes with a built-in flash and a hot shoe feature that lets users choose from an extensive range of Canon Speedlite external flash kits like the 220EX, 420EX and 550EX. A wireless remote control device is provided, which users can use to control a variety of functions from anywhere, even the PC. And when still pictures are good enough, the camera can be set to record a QVGA (320x240 pixels) video clip (with sound) for up to 30 seconds. For world-wide viewing compatibility, video output can be in either NTSC or PAL.

Ergonomics and value also matter

In addition to the huge palette of electronic features, the Pro90 has a rounded finish for a sure grip, a moulded exterior, and a metallic rubber finish. It is also designed to accept a rich array of accessories, from wide converter lens, to close-up lens to charge adapters and car battery cable kits. The camera comes with Canon's own Remote Capture software for interval shooting which also enables the camera to be controlled from a Macintosh or Windows PC via USB connection.

Included in the package are eight other image editing software tools, including Canon PhotoStitch and Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE. What's point of all that camera-power without sufficient storage, right? The Pro 90 is thus fully compatible with Type I and Type II CompactFlash cards, including IBM microdrives which provide up to 1GB of storage memory. Note: The camera comes with a one-year warranty.
