Creative just released its MuVo²s, two compact MP3 players with massive storage capacities, including a 1.5GB hybrid which stores up to 36 hours of music.Though it uses the same 1-inch, 1.5GB drive found in the Rio Nitrus and other upcoming devices, the minuscule Creative MuVo² (read MuVo squared) sets itself apart in a number of ways.
This player has impressive sound-quality specs: the signal-to-noise ratio is 98dB, the power rating is 15mW per channel, and the total harmonic distortion is less than 0.05 percent. The lithium-ion cell is removable, so you can buy a spare for long trips and replace the battery after it dies, usually after two to four years.
At some point in the future, Creative will start shipping an optional remote (recommended retail price to be advised) that adds an FM tuner. The MuVo comes with a carrying case and retails for AU$499.
Compared with the Nitrus, the MuVo² is 60 percent heavier and less pocket-friendly, weighing 73g instead of 60g and housed in a square rather than curved casing. When it comes to battery life, the MuVo²'s 10-hour rating beats the iPod's by a few hours--but the Nitrus's cell, while non-removable, provides 16 hours of playback time.
If you're looking for clean sound and a low price, and you don't mind syncing your player at least once a week, the MuVo² is hard to pass up. But if you value portability over affordability, go with the more expensive Nitrus or wait and see what RCA, Samsung, and iRiver have to offer.
