Creative moves into storage space with MuVo

Creative has announced a combination MP3 player and USB storage device.

Creative Technology, known for its range of sound cards and other multimedia devices, will soon ship a tiny MP3 player that also doubles as removable USB storage.

The Nomad MuVo is cigarette lighter-sized gadget with a detachable pod that can be inserted directly into a computer's USB port, allowing for drag-and-drop file transfer.

Besides music files, the flash memory storage can also hold any type of data file, so Creative is also marketing the product as an all-round portable data storage gadget similar to items such as Trek's Thumbdrive or Sony's Micro Vault.

Both MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) formats can be played back. The 128MB version, which can store about 2 hours of MP3 files, will cost AU$399 when it ships next month, while the 64MB version will cost AU$299.

The main housing of the device powers the device with a single AAA battery, which has a claimed 12-hour life. The detachable memory pod contains the bulk of the electronics: The flash memory, the playback controls and the headphone jack.
