Nullsoft's Winamp is the reigning champ of a glut of high-fidelity music players that have been developed for Microsoft Windows based platforms. In case you haven't heard, the popularity of MP3s is exploding in the field of digital music. Now, Nullsoft has released version 2.72 of its popular Winamp program. When it comes to playing MP3 files Winamp is the player of choice.

Winamp 2.72 has few discernible differences from 2.71. The Winamp interface has not changed much. You can still customise Winamp with many skins; save any adjustments you make to the ten band graphic equalizer, and use all of the downloadable visualizations. What you may not be able to see are the numerous bug fixes and enhancements that have been implemented in the internals of Winamp.

Version 2.72 builds upon the stability of version 2.71 by implementing additional fixes such as:

• Made Winamp Agent smaller, use less memory, not interfere with ScanDisk, etc
• Fixed some skin related bugs
• Fixed cursor bugs - cursors are now loaded all at once
• Made zip skin loading more reliable (and slightly slower)
• Updated directmusic/midiOut plug-in
• Updated mikamp plug-in
• Small avs updates

What Winamp still provides is an easy-to-use interface for playing back either your own compact discs or MP3 files you've downloaded off the Web.
