QLD Police scores $50m for ICT

The Queensland Police has received $50.2 million for a wide range of ICT projects in the Queensland budget handed down today.

ICT projects for Queensland Police announced in the 2010/11 Queensland state budget included a new weapons licensing system, a digital integrated traffic camera system, a telecommunications interception system and a progression of computer-aided dispatch.

The development and implementation of the new weapons licensing system will allow users to apply and pay for their licences online. It will replace the old system which required weapons licence applicants to visit a police station for all licensing matters.

The digital-integrated traffic camera system will replace the current back office system and will include a roll-out of digital red light and speed cameras.

The permanent telecommunications interception system will allow Queensland Police to monitor a wider variety of communication devices used for criminal activity.

The Queensland Police's Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) will continue to be implemented. The CAD system allows officers to optimise response times and prioritise demand for service calls.

Among other IT projects funded in the budget, Queensland Health, currently plagued by problems with the roll-out of its new SAP-based payroll system, has been allocated $79.4 million for the replacement and upgrades of IT equipment and to provide support for e-health strategy and clinical information systems.

CITEC, the Queensland Government's primary technology provider, will also receive $30.1 million in capital expenditure funding to continue the implementation of the whole-of-government system for Queensland ICT infrastructure.
