Private sector the new industry darling

Despite my predictions for an "age of austerity", I haven't seen signs of fiscal prudence from Julia Gillard's new government yet. New Zealand's government, on the other hand, is certainly tightening the screws.

Late last week, the New Zealand Government announced a new IT strategy that has a greater focus on cost control for its $2 billion annual IT spend.

This week also saw a new all-of-government computer purchasing contract that promises savings of $35 million over five years.

It seems the public sector has now become slim pickings and that the private sector offers better job opportunities now.

One IT firm is creating 30 jobs in Auckland.

Recent recruitment surveys strengthen my view. Confidence in ICT is returning, with the private sector having a "recruitment spree", according to reports.

Thus, as the state sheds jobs, the private sector is taking up the slack in New Zealand.

It might be time to rethink who you're selling to, or which jobs you're applying for.
