Transport for NSW, the super-agency that manages the state's road, rail and maritime operations, has created a new role to spearhead IT transformation within the organisation that may soon involve migrating to an IT-as-a-service model.

The agency published an advertisement in the Australian Financial Review this morning looking for a new group general manager ICT (CIO).

"The group general manager ICT will have primary responsibility for the development and implementation of an integrated organisation-wide ICT strategy," the ad reads.

"The focus will be on ICT strategies that deliver real business outcomes, making the right ICT decisions while being commercially pragmatic. The role is about developing and delivering critical service support infrastructure to provide superior services to its customers while improving operation efficiencies that support the business," the agency added.

Transport for NSW told ZDNet Australia today that the position has been newly created within the agency.

"We are currently recruiting for a new group general manager of ICT. This is a new position to oversee ICT functions and develop an ICT strategy within Transport for NSW," it said in a statement today.

The new IT manager's agenda may soon involve migrating the super-agency's noisy spectrum of IT products into a single, streamlined IT-as-a-service model for its messaging, desktop and mobility products.

The request for information was aired last month and asks prospective suppliers how they would migrate 35,000 email accounts, 25,000 desktop accounts and 2000 new devices to new, cost-effective products.
