Commonwealth Bank warns customers over e-mail fraud

Fraudsters have again targeted Commonwealth Bank customers in an e-mail scam.

The latest fraud involves an e-mail which purports to be a message from the bank about unclaimed funds. It encourages recipients to call a phone number, and has prompted the Commonwealth Bank to release a statement warning its customers.

"Be wary of any e-mails received which indicate that the bank has been trying to contact them in relation to unclaimed funds being held," the statement said.

The statement said that any unsolicited contact in regard to unclaimed funds by e-mail should be treated with a high level of suspicion.

"These e-mails have not been issued by the bank... The bank does not contact customers by e-mail when dealing with unclaimed funds," it said.

It urges customers to delete the e-mail if it has been received, and moves to dispel any belief that the bank's systems were compromised.

The Commonwealth Bank is now "working with relevant authorities to identify persons behind this attempt to deceive its customers".
