U2 fans render Ticketek site inaccessible

Ticketek was effectively knocked offline for "thousands" of music fans this morning as 200,000 tickets for a U2 tour went on sale.

Ticketek, which is one of Australia's most popular online ticket booking sites, takes precautions to limit the number of people that can access its Web site on a "Hot Show Day", which is when an unusual rush of visitors is expected due to popular tickets going on sale.

A Ticketek spokesperson told ZDNet Australia that access to the site was throttled on purpose to ensure that the lucky ones that did manage to access the site would be able to complete their transaction reliably.

"We sold out really quickly so nothing was actually down, it was just a matter of massive demand. We also have a call centre and the agency network but all of those were at full capacity trying to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of people that want to go to see U2," the spokesperson said.

The last time Ticketek's site experienced such a rush was the day Kylie Minogue tickets went on sale at the end of January.

"We can't have an infinite number of people making their transactions. Kylie was massive and U2 is a huge band and has huge public appeal,' said the spokesperson, who pointed out that to aid the throughput of visitors on the Web site during busy days, the site only allows each user 15 minutes to complete their transaction.

"[The time limit] is to ensure that people are not on the site on a hot show day just to browse. They go through the transaction so someone else can come on," the spokesperson said.

Fans that were unable to purchase their tickets through Ticketek who are considering buying them from online auction house eBay could be in for a shock. The massive demand has led to hundreds of tickets being offered on eBay at highly inflated prices.

Within hours of the U2 tickets going on sale, eBay had sellers offering show tickets at many times their face value.

    U2 Tickets on e-bayLinda Mahood -- 05/12/05 (in reply to #120124363)

Hello! Hello! I am an avid U2 Fan and a true Australian. I would like to see you do a story on the dissapointing spectacular sales on e-bay for U2 tickets. Is it not obvious that these poeple have simply taken advantage of the "Big Name Band" and deliberately pruchased many tickets just to sell them and make a quick buck!? Yes many fans have missed out & if U2 wanted to charge $3 500 for a ticket they would! Australia should be asshamed of themselves for being such piggybacking selfish money hungry wannabees! Go out and make your own honest money! They have really no idea what U2 is about by committing this act and are embarrassing to the real Australian. Selling tickets on E-bay should be illegal and should not be accepted at the door!

Linda, get off your high horse before you fall off.Markus -- 05/12/05 (in reply to #120124364)

Well Linda, I would have agreed with your little rant up until the morning of Monday the 5th of December, which is when I waited in line to buy tickets to U2's concert in Brisbane.

I heard about the dissapointing spectacular(?) sales of the Sydney tickets, so I bought one extra to auction off to the highest bidder. I won't lose any sleep over selling that ticket, because I think there are people out there who are happy to pay for the convenience of getting a concert ticket without having to queue up for several hours.

And another thing, seeing as I'm on a roll; what's the deal with people calling themselves true Australians? Is there a whole bunch of fake Australians out there which I haven't been told about? This idea that someone, eg. you, is supposed to be a real Australian is silly and, dare I say it, unAustralian.

Don't think you are doing a community service by offering tickets at an inflated price. You are simply ripping people off. Why should you make money because you are lucky enough to get your ticket. There are people who do line up for hours and still don't get tickets because people like you are buying more than they need.

i was one of the lucky ones to get tickets to the vertigo tour, mind you @ 3am after camping out since midnight iwas told by the manager of the glen waverley ticketmaster that he had been giving out numbers for the cue since thursday.. this is not a fair process! much like tickets being sold on e-bay. i missed out on tickets to the falls festival, but as you can imagine they r readily available @ e-bay at a ridiculus! real music fans deserve these tickets not money hungry scum! something needs to be done!

    Music fan renders U2 innaccessibleAnonymous -- 06/12/05

A Music fan was effectively knocked for six when he found out "thousands" of Australians still care about the Bono and the fact the band has made crap music for at least ten years now.

Jealous 'Pussycat Dolls' fan renders U2 as supreme beingsKerri Thomas -- 12/12/05 (in reply to #120124408)

U2 may have made crap music for at least 10 years now ... but that's your opinion. As for me, I'm more inclined to be on U2's side, after all, you don't have 200,000 Australians queueing up for days to pay money to see you do you? Face it, U2 have more money, are likely to be better looking (and that's really saying something) and attract more members of the opposite sex in one day, than you ever could in a lifetime ... do you want me to go on? I wouldn't pay $400 to see you hang, but I would pay the same amount to see four committed, successful and talented men entertain the world with their tremendous talent. With you at home sulking, the rest of us lucky enough to get tickets will have a great time at the concerts. Enough said.

U2 more than the musicAnonymous -- 13/12/05 (in reply to #120124984)

Fair enough Kerri re music. But the good looking thing was way of mark. The Bonster is a personal fave of mine (and people mag) and when you see Larry Mullen's divine poterior sashaying up that runway i dare you not to swoon!!!

    I'd pay $400 if they retireAnonymous -- 14/12/05 (in reply to #120124984)

I never knew music was about what 200,000 other sheep liked. baa baa

I also never knew it was about U2 having more money. I'm sure if they wanted they could retire today. I wish they would because their last 10 years has really put a dent on their career. They are little more than an over produced pop machine these days and every time Bono opens his mouth I just want to punch him.

And the fact that it is $400 dollars...does a mega rock band really need to earn that? You're getting robbed blind you sheep. Wake up.

Let's face it U2 are the Cold Chisel of Ireland and like Jimmy Barnes, Bono and his pals really need to give it up and lay on the beach and endulge in all those members of the opposite sex they seem to have lining up according to you.

So, have a good time at the concert, find a bald 30-something who also wants to sleep with Bono, have fat ugly children and enjoy your life living in the Shire.

Ticketmaster: dumb websiteIvan Lutrov -- 14/12/05

My decision to get the tickets online from [Ticketmaster](http://www.ticketmaster.com.au/) left me disappointed on two counts. First of all, the concert was sold out. Ok, no big deal. The band will be back in Melbourne another time. Worse is the fact that their website is too dumb to tell you this upfront. You have to search for tickets first, even though it's a pointless exercise.

After some 15 minutes their website finally admits to me that there __isn't even one__ single ticket left. The concert has been sold out.

How dumb is the software that powers this website? Imagine if I phoned them instead, to be told upfront that there are tickets and then, after 5 minutes of conversation, to be told the opposite.

    U2 ticketsStephanie -- 18/12/05

I Have been a U2 fan since the age of 12 and am very disappointed i cannot get a ticket for the concert. It really p****s me off that their are people out there who only buy tickets for bands such as U2 for no reason other than pure greed. Scalpers should be banned from ebay.
