Linus Torvalds admits that the timing of the Linux 2.6.24 kernel was a mistake.

Responding to whether the release schedule would be pushed back to accommodate his attendance at linux.conf.au, Torvalds said he normally would not have made the release but people were asking whether the kernel would be in limbo for week.
"I decided I had my trusty laptop with me and there's internet here too, I can just do all the merging.
"I think it was mistake actually, I should have just said we'll extend everything by a week because some of the other people that are here said 'now we're forced to work here too'. So some people were unhappy, some people were happy -- we'll see.
"It's working out ok but maybe it wasn't worth the extra work just to keep the release on schedule."
Well, thats the price of believing that you can not change schedules because it will hurt customers.
So you have made people unhappy by rigidly sticking to a schedule that your gut feeling told you should change.
Go with the gut.
