Torvalds: Stick to C for kernel coding

Linus Torvalds at linux.conf.au 2008 discussed how C remains the most appropriate coding language for the Linux kernel.

In order to watch video content you need to enable javascript and install Flash player version 8 or above.

"We have certain rules for what we expect [from] our programmers", Torvalds told ZDNet.com.au, "The kernel is about low level stuff, and C, for the kernel, is the right language."

Torvalds noted that while C++ has other more appropriate uses, it, along with other programming language were not appropriate for the kernel. "It's not just C++", he said.

  1. Milking this interview for all it's worth Dean -- 12/02/08

It looks like there's been like 5 "news" stories from this one interview with Torvalds. I'm sure he's a very interesting guy, but couldn't we just put it all in the one story? I mean, this whole story is only two paragraphs, and contains nothing that a 1st year computer science student wouldn't know...

Who is the intended audience of this "story"?

Its an attempt to justify 2 journos going on a rort to Melbourne...

    2. Melbourne? Rort? WTF? Anonymous -- 12/02/08

Now who in their right mind would enjoy getting sent to another Australian city? What a lame, cheap-**** concept you have of a "rort"!

Earlier this month, Telstra put out a press release trumpeting that it's come up with a new phone coaching service to help people who are "bamboozled" by their mobiles. Another excellent example of wrongheaded thinking from the mobile industry.

Sometimes, a well-placed and well-timed letter can make all the difference. Other times, it can make no difference at all — and even hurt your case. This week's missive by the Competitive Carriers' Coalition, I would suggest, falls into the latter category.
