Queensland Police want smarter data

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) will add a business intelligence (BI) layer to its core records management system used for basic police duties.
The records management system is provided by Canadian vendor Niche Technology and forms the basis of its integrated policing solution, dubbed QPRIME (Queensland Police Records and Information Management Exchange).
QPRIME allows police officers to carry out common activities such as incident recording and investigation, property and evidence management, and analysis of deployment resources.
In tender documents released this week, QPS said Niche had recommended the use of commercial business intelligence software to extend the reporting and analytical ability of its records management system.
"The scope at present ... is to provide QPRIME with a BI presentation layer; however the solution must have the ability to scale to an enterprise level, including areas such as human resource and finance management," the tender documents said.
"QPS intends to deploy the BI solution to over 10,000 police personnel."
QPS will sign a business intelligence vendor for the project by early December.

Upgrading

QPS said its current QPRIME implementation made use of Microsoft's Reporting Services, Report Builder and Analysis Services tools to deliver information analysis and reporting.
These tools are delivered through the use of Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 environment, also utilising the vendor's Internet Information Services Web server software.
However, the police service said it now wanted "a true BI presentation layer", delivered through a long-term relationship with a BI vendor.
Geographical information is also part of the project. "QPS has also engaged MapInfo as its preferred geographical information systems vendor to integrate geospatial capabilities into QPRIME," the tender documents said.
The QPS currently employs some 8,434 police officers (tipped to soon grow to around 9,100) and 3,257 other staff members.
The police service's wider ICT environment includes the following elements:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (information analysis)
  • Microsoft Active Directory (authorisation, authentication and single sign-on)
  • Microsoft .NET framework (software development)
  • Telstra (wide area network)
