Queensland Rail has gone to market for a new SAP-based freight management system for its commercial freight business, which it expects to double in volume by 2011.
Queensland Rail operates one of the nation's major transport businesses with annual revenue of around AU$2 billion, with the general freight business representing a quarter of this revenue at AU$250 million.
The project will be managed by the group's chief information officer, currently Dallas Stower. The group declined to respond to questions about what systems currently provided freight management services.
According to tender documents released this week, the system would need to deliver a "transport and logistics supply chain solution centred on the SAP [Transport Management] 6.0/7.0 module and integrated to other SAP modules and Queensland Rail legacy systems."
QR's SAP installation is a sizeable one, with some 450 concurrent users and a database size of 350GB run on Microsoft's SQL Server platform. The database is growing by 5-10GB per month.
