New Windows OS within 3 years: Microsoft

Microsoft is already planning its next major version of Windows and it won't be five years in the making as its predecessor Vista was.

The software giant's timeframe to ship the upgrade -- known internally as version "7" -- is roughly three years ZDNet Australia's sister site CNET News.com has learned.

The company discussed Windows 7 last week at a conference for its field sales force in the US, according to sources close to the software maker.

While the company provided few details, Windows 7, the next client version of the operating system, will be among the steps taken by Microsoft to establish a more predictable release schedule, according to sources. The company plans a more "iterative" process of information disclosure to business customers and partners, sources said.

Windows Vista, the oft-delayed most recent release of Windows, shipped to businesses in November and to consumers in January after more than five years of development. Vista's gestation period was marked by shifting product details as internal priorities changed and problems arose with development.

Like Vista, Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.

Next up on Microsoft's agenda is Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista, which is expected before the year's end.

The discussion of Windows' future isn't surprising, given that Microsoft has been criticised by business customers for delays related to Vista. Many business customers pay for Microsoft's software under a license agreement called Software Assurance.

Windows 7 was previously known by the code name Vienna. A Microsoft representative confirmed that Windows 7 is the internal code name for the next client release of Windows. The details were released "as part of our ongoing outreach to enterprise customers and partners, Microsoft has begun sharing plans for how they will continue to deliver value to businesses in the future ... Software Assurance customers in particular," a representative said in a statement via e-mail.

"Microsoft is scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year time frame, and then the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar," according to the representative.

Sure........just you wait, in 4 years they'll be rushing to push a creaky piece of garbage out the door.

    No-one believes them anymore.

I agree. Microsoft is fast running out of ideas. Why can't they leave XP as is. For most users, the home PC with XP is all they will ever need.

Well in case you don´t know Microsoft owns part of Apple so they just can´t take over the market.
I agree that Vista was kind of disapointment for some and joy to others, but corporations like Microsoft must always be on the move. I like to test and explore any OS i can get, and i would like to see what Microsoft has to offer. Besides i´m kind of tired of XP.

Out of date before you get home?Anonymous -- 17/08/08 (in reply to #320109730)

What the hell has hardware got to do with this, sure, it's gunna require better hardware specs then previous OS' but bringing out a new operating system doesnt make your new laptop obsolete by the time you bring it home, unless of course you take 3 years to travel back, then in which case dont whine about it?

Oh, and keep shitting on our heads? 3 years (which it will be longer than anyway) isn't exactly in a few days, its 3 years mate, lets have a look, 5 years after XP Vista comes out, if you choose to buy it then theres roughly about £70 by the time you get round to it (give or take abit for what version you buy), im pretty sure that in 3 years, you can afford to buy a new version, which you probably wont buy until about a year after the release anyway.

If your gunna complain, then why dont you just torrent it, seems to work for me as personally I dont see the harm in me not paying for an OS when theres still millions of people doing it, to be honest, if windows app's worked on Linux, i'd use Linux and donate some money to the company who made that version.

I know it seems like i've just switched sides, but there was things in the above post said that was bollocks towards the topic.

Microsoft owning part of AppleAnonymous -- 17/08/08 (in reply to #320108185)

I think you'll find Microsoft have never owned any of Apple, they bought into shares but they where non voting meaning they dont own any of the company, even if they were voting shares, I think they've sold them all now anyway.

    Fear of Change?Pseudo_Kid -- 22/08/08

Didn't this exact same thing happen when XP was released!? Of course everyone hated it initially until they fixed it with the development of Service Packs and software vendors eventually caught up with support.

The solution to backwards compatibility is either dual install or use OS emulators. As for the whinge of having to upgrade hardware ... umm what else is new? Try running Windows XP on a P1!

Keeping up with technology is an expensive addiction ... though fun!

    I think i'll stick with ubuntuAnonymous -- 27/08/08

No business is going to be even remotely interested in any more of microsofts over priced trash, and they ain't gonna splash out on mac hardware when they could just use a FREE operating system which is faster, more secure, more user friendly, and better supported(in terms of troubleshooting etc). Seriously, every shoddy software release by M$ is just paving the way for open source software. Sure, other companies will try to rip it off , but they just cant compete with the speed in which GPL software grows, they might as well just **** into the wind.

First off I just like to state that some of you who complain about spending more money on another OS should spend some money on a grammar course. Secondly, I too agree that MS has put out a bunch of crap and leave us to fix it. But to most people who are gamers, we welcome a new OS from MS as dx 10 is only of Vista which is a memory hog. I can't wait and I hope that it is better than XP and Vista. I hope that they do their homework this time and truely bring out a product that has been severely tested and allows for dx 10. If you are true gamers out there and only play on XP...you should see what your game would look like in Vista...truely amazing. But I have to agree that they push things out too early and cause a lot of pain, not to mention stop with the Nazi programming in the background spying on us.

    windows new osAnonymous -- 19/11/08

I think this is bullshit! in 5 years time we will all still be waiting and all they will change is the theme settings and maybe a few other minor features.
I recently bought a laptop (hp compac) and it is so slow and so crap i'm soon going to put windows xp pro because vista is so ****
overall windows 200 pro sp4 is the best operating system for advanced users but just for home users it should have just stayed at windows xp home or pro.
