New SUSE Linux to debut this week

in brief Software vendor Novell plans to make the latest 10.1 version of its SUSE Linux operating system available late this week.

"SUSE Linux 10.1 Final will be released on Thursday, 11th of May," a Web site which coordinates development of the software currently states.

Version 10.1 of SUSE Linux is understood to be an important milestone for Novell as it prepares to release the landmark version 10 of its business-focused SUSE Linux Enterprise (formerly known as the Novell Linux Desktop) operating system later this year.

The company's president Ron Hovsepian has flagged version 10 of the operating system as mature enough to kickstart enterprise deployments in the next 12 to 18 months.

I like it Greg -- 09/05/06 (in reply to #120134104)

I saw the demo vid's on their web site (http://www.novell.com/video/desktop/) and it reminds me of a Mac. I'm impressed with their self-description as a good network citizen, a client for all environments. Perhaps this will finally be the desktop Linux deployment we’ve waited for. I hope.

    Hi Greg,

I have to admit, it does look good. But Linux has been getting better on the desktop for years - I doubt there will be one critical version that will push adoption.

    Cheers,

It was interesting to witness Conroy's recent enthusiasm to spruik the NBN's role in supporting the Smart Grid, Smart City initiative. What a pity that Conroy hadn't yet seen the damning report from the Victorian auditor-general about that state's smart-meter roll-out.
