NSW Education Dept's portal well under way

The New South Wales Department of Education and Training (DET) has revealed its extensive Web-based service delivery portal for students and staff is up and running at more than half of its 2,500 sites state-wide.

The Oracle-based portal first conceived five years ago is used to deliver intranet services, as well as legacy and new corporate applications, through a Web browser to the department's 1.3 million public school and TAFE students, as well as its 130,000 staff, and is seen as a key platform for future applications.

"We've got over 1,400 sites up and running and delivering the services," the department's application architect Phillip Sherwin told a conference run by Oracle and local Oracle consulting firm Red Rock last week.

Sherwin said the portal currently averaged 200 logons per minute for a school day, with a total of between 90,000 to 110,000 people using the portal each day. That number was steadily growing as the solution reached more sites, he said.

These levels of activity are made possible by DET's use of F5's BIG-IP load balancing and Firepass SSL VPN hardware solutions.

DET's portal is currently being run from one data centre site, but the department is currently implementing a completely redundant design in a second site.

"We haven't finished implementing the twin site, but we're nearly there ... probably 60 percent," said Sherwin.

Although DET has done a substantial amount of work to get the portal to this point since its conception back in 2001/2002, Sherwin said due to the asset's nature as a service delivery model, there was no real end in sight to the project.

"There's no real finish," Sherwin told the conference. "With something like this, every single project that comes from the business, we tend to look at it and say, yes it's just another service [to be run through the portal]."

"Just an example that we're implementing at the moment is the new schools reporting system, that's another system that actually is accessible via the portal. So we do really use it as our service delivery model."

Ah, the incredible hack Anonymous -- 06/11/06

As a school computer tech, I know the portal only too well.

Most of what has been said in this article is DET publicity. Yes, it's probably all true (although I'd question the number of users), but the point is the whole thing is not user friendly, does not work very well, and stinks of hack jobs.

Known issues include randomly getting other users' email inboxes when opening the email account. This issue is ongoing and as yet, DET have not warned anyone about it.

The entire project is ambitious and a good idea, but the implementation is poor, and worse, forced onto us.

Sounds like a pretty serious issue -- particularly for a sensitive system for students and teachers etc.

I'll ask DET NSW about this and see what they say.

Lotsa Luck Anonymous -- 13/11/06 (in reply to #320071152)

Lotsa luck getting a straight answer from one of Department stooges. Find a few of the school Computer Coordinators or Regional Technology Advisors, get them drunk, and REALLY receive an education.

Everyone above that is part of the problem, not the solution.

About Talking To DET... Anonymous -- 01/09/09 (in reply to #320071152)

But The DET Are Responsible For This Portal & Filtering Nonsense & Messed With The Internet & Named It "Eduweb"(Even Though The Is NO Such Thing But They Still Believe That The Nonsense Exists) And Trust Me, "Eduweb Is Internet Hell, So Don't Talk To DET..... YELL AT EM' AND DEMAND THEM TO QUIT USING THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!

Replacing a systerm that worked with one that doesn't Anonymous -- 06/11/06

I can't imagine writing a rah-rah article about this abomination. The thing barely works (at best), runs like a pig, and is outsourced to so many different contractors that no one is quite sure who is responsible for what. And everything is being done by the lowest bidder.

The whole thing was done for the supposed purpose of protecting the children, which is the one it does NOT do (unless you count the children who won't use it any more than they have to as "protected").

And irony is that the system it is replacing worked far better, was faster, and protected kids just as well. It was $100 million cheaper, too.

One more thing. While the article was throwing usage stats around, it failed to mention that the Portal is handling less than 1/14 of the traffic it needs to handle (do the math). It also fails to mention those days when no one can log into the portal at all.

It's not all smiles and sunshine Anonymous -- 06/11/06

"The portal" / Web Services / SIBE / AIBE / IBE is at best a total farce.

It has taken them 5 years to introduce nothing more than a beurocratic mish mash of pages with hyperlinks. Oh, and Outlook for e-mail.

Many issues exist with the system at present, in no way is it ready for prime time as far as I'm concerned. I'd consider it to still be in beta stage but of course all of NSW schools will be cutover in a few weeks time.

It has cost them millions, for little gain. What was wrong with what we had? Why could we not introduce a school-by-school management model? Why must it be so non standard that it requires 6-12 months of testing with browsers that are already 6-12 months old before it is deemed to be "usable". Security is obviously not one of the DET's priorities.

Schools are having this system forced upon us without any consultation whatsoever with those at the coalface dealing with all the c**p day to day.

Many in the DET corporate itself are refusing to switch from their regular @det accounts for fear of things not working!

What have you achieved DET? A b******ised version of what many schools have been getting on with themselves for a number of years.

    Thanks for nothing.

    Well Underway? Anonymous -- 06/11/06

Well underway to the graveyard, the system is absolute trash, as a computer tech at a high school the worst part is having to tell students that when something goes wrong we have no idea why.

The other good one is a student in year 12 having access to CEPS and a few other staff only facilities. Secure? Hell no.

The system is a farce, and does not protect the kids in the slightest.

Hey Mr anonymous paedophile that kid your stalking has used their education account with THIER FULL NAME AS THE EMAIL ADDRESS. (firstname.lastname@education.nsw.edu.au) nice a safe huh? So now instead of stalking them over the internet they can stalk them in real life. Woo for protection.

Add to the bonus that the DET is so inept at providing any sort of technical support that we have to search for our own solutions to problems, most of my solutions’ as a computer tech teacher come from forums, every single web address with the word forum is blocked. Considering that it took the DET four months to change a subnet mask on our new server, the chances of getting a quick response are practically zero.

    Worst. Idea. Ever.

Is it? Anonymous -- 08/11/06 (in reply to #320071181)

Maybe you are right. I suppose it is conceivable that somewhere, somehow there is a paedophile so stupid that he could look at "bobby.brady@det.edu.au" and not realise that it was a person's name (without being told).

Who has access? Anonymous -- 14/11/06

As a university lecturer trying to teach trainee teachers the intricacies of education policy and practice neither I nor any of my students have been able to convice the DET tech. gurus that we need access - instead we flounder in the dark, unable to access the latest 'developments' supposedly published (hidden) behind the portal. Is this satisfactory and fair to prospective teachers? Does it enable them to be ready to go when they are appointed? I think not!

Half empty or half full... Anonymous -- 16/11/06

Goodness! In my view as Educational proffessionals we are life long learners involved in the business of educational change. Technology is a moving and changing beast, we either sink or swim.. We choose to be innovative or we choose to stay still and or we go backwards. Our client is our students, this is their world! No one said the process was going to be smooth sailing, far from it! DET is creating a portal that is brilliant in concept yet not what we want-yet!. It is ours and we are the ones that will make it work, be what we want. We are in the process of change, no pain, no gain. Keep moving educators, turn that computer on, use it, send an email if you know how, think of solutions rather than only seeing the negative! As someone in this list said, you are either the solution or the problem. Which one are you?

WA has same problems Anonymous -- 08/12/06

WA Ed Dept has similar problems - project is overdue and incomplete. The only thing that is complete is the IT Dept's incompetence. Just ask a teacher.

    Outlook Anonymous -- 24/02/07

The outlook version that comes with the portal has no physical way to export anything to your own personal outlook. So whats the use? The IT HELP said "we don't have that option installed" Bit of a waste of time if you can't back it up and also if it crashes as others above have said

First hand experience with portal Anonymous -- 26/02/07

The 'AIBE' portal was implemented at my school and I must say it's the most annoying thing ever! Whenever I participate in a multimedia class it's pot luck if the portal is going to let me login this time or whether it will be down for us again, it's usually down. The system is slow and restrictive, everything is blocked! YouTube, ALL email service providers, Google Images - all blocked. Type 'download' into Google and it's blocked. The censors are out of touch as some required sites are automatically blocked by their system.

I would have to say that this system is pretty much a way the DET can feel like they are leading the way to the future technology wise whilst also keeping a tight grip on us. All of the teachers complain and no-one listens.

The portal is poorly coded, I've broken it down and can't believe it would take 5 years to work out! They just got a guy who can do some nice photoshop work and someone who can script some basic HTML to tie it altogther and hey there's the AIBE portal. Throw in a login procedure and bob's your uncle.

School based internet management was brilliant. This new system is just insulting to the generation which is more experienced in tech than the ones 'guiding' them with this portal.

    Stupid DET F6 Master -- 28/10/09

I am fed up with the Gay NSW Department of Education's "DET Portal"!, a proxy server for schools that controls access the Internet. Since the Portal was implemented, Internet access has suffered in speed and reliability.

However, what I find most infuriating is that E-mail services (apart from the DET one) are blocked. No longer can you access Gmail or Hotmail. I believe this is a gross negligence of privacy rights, as the DET can read every email sent by a student (Unless encryption is used). There is also no privacy policy on the site. (Isn't a privacy policy a legal requirement of sites that collect user information?) This wouldn't be so bad if the DET email was good, but the email service they provide is hopeless, COMPLETELY USELESS, GAY AND A PIECE OF BOLLOCKS!!!! Trying to compare the DET email to Gmail/Hotmail is like comparing Firefox 2.0 to IE6!

This regulation of email, combined with blocking of blogging sites, email and forums gives NSW students an insight of what internet use is like in China. And I must say that previously to the transition to the Portal, filtering was in place - but the filtering at that time blocked offensive material, not email services.

In my school at least, teachers, students and system admins stand united in contempt of this "Portal". This is just something the DET introduced so they can tell everyone that they are "providing secure internet and email" to students. This a disgusting publicity stunt by the DET.

Most concerning, however is their ability to read our email. If one keyword is flagged, the email can be manually examined. I am also concerned with Yahoo! search being blocked - Our science teacher hates this - You cant just search for graphical information, which pre-portal was needed regularly for in-class computer work!

    The DET Are REAL B**CHES!!!
