Microsoft fired Chief Information Officer Stuart Scott on Friday after two years with the company, saying he violated company policies.
"We can confirm that Stuart Scott was terminated after an investigation for violation of company policies," a Microsoft representative said.
Microsoft said that two executives -- General Manager Shahla Aly and Corporate Vice President Alain Crozier -- will assume Scott's responsibilities until a replacement is identified.
Microsoft declined to comment further on Scott's departure and made no other information available to the press, nor did it specify which policy or policies Scott is alleged to have violated.
Scott's prompt dismissal was noted earlier Tuesday by ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley. Microsoft attached an editor's note to Scott's profile on its corporate website, listing him as a "former" CIO as of 5 November, saying: "Stuart Scott's employment with Microsoft ended in early November 2007".
Scott joined Microsoft in July 2005 after 17 years at General Electric. In 2003, he was named one of the top 100 chief information officers by CIO Magazine.
