Local take-up of XP -steady"

Australian consumer reaction to the recent release of Windows XP has been "steady" in the first week of availability, according to leading distributors.

-There's been a five percent swing towards XP compared with the core office products, which is pretty strong," said Darren Miller of ASI, an Australian systems manufacturer and distributor. -It's been more professional users than home users, the professional users are definitely keen."

-Government sectors have been hesitant to take up the new technology, but we're hoping for greater penetration during the Christmas period, especially in the corporate sector," says Miller.

"We're very pleased with the initial take-up, it looks to be a successful product" said Lorraine Cowan of Tech Pacific, Australia's largest IT products distributor.

She said it is difficult to say if the new OS will be as successful as Windows 98. "The key factor will be the replenishment rates, which we'll know over the next two to four weeks."

-Sales have been quite strong," said Sharon Selwood, of Harris Technology, an IT products reseller. -We were a little bit unsure, with the events on September 11, how the market was going to respond, but it's a good product and we're very happy with the results."

She added that sales were better than for Windows ME, and slightly above Windows 98.

What does it give me above Win2k ???

Why do I need the "Windows Product Activation" hassles?

Take it or leave it?, I can leave it.

XP is certanly a good head & shoulders above 9x/Me, not that much of an advance on 2000 though. I'm not sure why the take up by home users isn't very high. Integrated CD burning and the increased stability over 9x are almost worth the excessive upgrade price.
2000 users (especially businesses who have only recently migrated to 2k) however would probably be better off with what they have unless specific needs that 2k isn't able to fill but xp is.

So much for the product activation though, within 2 days of its release (25th) I could have obtained a copy of the corporate version of xp-pro, with the activation disabled. So much for MS's anti-piracy hopes.

XP has not value to me, I run Win2k and once it is upgrade time, then it will be Linux.

    Do I need activation harassment?
    Of course not.
XP is only good to MS and everyone along the value chain such as retailers.
