After only a month online, Linkya is making way for Australian business people and professionals to jump on the social networking zeitgeist.

For Linkya's founder Michael Brecht, what started as just an "idea at the beginning of the year" has quickly transformed into Australia's newest social networking platform.

"It's aimed at professionals and business people of all types in Australia, but we already have quite a few international users as well," said Brecht.

After founding the company in April, Brecht and his team spent the next five and half months programming the platform, which went live in September.

The network has almost 1,000 registered members so far.

Brecht is hoping that the network will eventually enable users to "visualise the six degrees of separation theory in business."

"We're looking to represent the whole spectrum," said Brecht. "We'd like to have a wide range of users from small business owners and freelancers to all types of professionals."

Unlike many other social networking sites Linkya is not necessarily free. While a basic membership to the network costs nothing, Brecht has decided to develop a subscription based premium membership featuring "an enhanced search function", he said.

According to Brecht, premium membership is free until the end of the year but will cost users AU$9.50 a month as of 2008.
