Under the global program the 4 Australians of 70 academics to receive funding worldwide will be given between AU$50,000 and AU$65,000 each.
The program was set up by IBM to enhance development around the Eclipse project, an extendable open source IDE that was originally started by the company and later released as an open source project.
"Developers must be given the support and latitude to learn from trial and error. By providing ongoing investment in open source software development, IBM is ensuring Australia plays a substantial part in shaping the future of global software development." said Tony Best, General Manager, Public Sector, IBM Australia in a statement released the company.
The four local winners will be invited to present their work at an Eclipse Innovation Workshop that will be attended by other winners globally in October.
