Gershon report released

The Australian government late yesterday released Sir Peter Gershon's report into federal public sector use of information and communications technology.

The report contains analysis for the government's use of ICT and a staged plan to implement recommendations.

"The model proposed by Sir Peter details seven critical areas where can gain greater benefits from and improve the effectiveness of our ICT investments," Lindsey Tanner, Minister for Finance and Deregulation, said in a statement.

Gershon had suggested that the government improve ICT governance and increase efficiencies of ICT operations, better the management of its skills base, conduct data centre planning, interact better with industry and ensure that its ICT operations are sustainable, according to Tanner.

The report has been in Tanner's hands since August, but the government has now decided to release it before examining the recommendations in the Cabinet.

"I am confident that the recommended actions and proposed changes can be successfully implemented over the next two to three years, and will deliver substantial benefits to the Australian Government," Gershon said of his work.

Tune in for further coverage of the report.
