Firefox 3 unleashed next week

Open source application maker Mozilla has said the latest major release of its Firefox browser will be ready for download on 17 June.

In a statement on the Mozilla Developer Center website, posted yesterday, the organisation claimed that, although Firefox 3 has been nearly three years in development, it only ever ships products when it feels they are ready.

"After more than 34 months of active development, and with the contributions of thousands, we're proud to announce that we're ready. It is our expectation to ship Firefox 3 this upcoming Tuesday, 17 June. Put on your party hats and get ready to download Firefox 3 — the best web browser, period," the organisation stated.

Mozilla is hoping to set a Guinness World Record on the release date for the most number of downloads of an application in a day. There is currently no official Guinness World Record for the task, which should make Mozilla's job easier. During the first 24 hours of Firefox 3's release, Mozilla is aiming for over 1.6 million downloads.

Mozilla is encouraging its community of over 175 million users to sign up on the spreadfirefox.com marketing site to receive Firefox 3 on the day of its release, to host download parties, and to put Firefox badges on websites and blogs. According to Mozilla, 43,362 people in the UK have already pledged to download Firefox 3 on its release date.

Firefox *laughs* Lord Watchdog -- 14/06/08

Firefox is the first piece of software I have seen to come out of Beta and still behave like it is in Alpha.

IE, Safari and Opera run rings around Firefox, which is why only the blogosphere actively promotes it as some sort of godsend.

I knew I should have laid off the crack, now I'm seeing comments from people in alternate universe's where rain falls upward...

As it happens I'm posting this from Safari (I have no problems with Safari or Opera) I just find if I want to do anything more than a lazy browse (ie put food on the table) I depend on Firefox ....

Yea... this alternate universe must be an interesting place. Coz in this one Firefox is king - period.

Firefox donwload day 17 no wait 18 June Anonymous -- 17/06/08

Firefox 3 Download Day attempt at a Guinness record is and abysmal failure after they decided to start the day at 10 AM PDT. Hands up all those that know where PDT applies. No-one in Australia can download Firefox 3 until 18 June. Further the response from Septics on the Firefox community websites to those who ask why there was no communication of the operative start time or time zone is bluntly to go and get @#$%
