E-learning finds more keen students

E-learning appears set to become the basis for career development at the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (DITR), with most training to be done online.

DITR will implement e-learning this year for 300 staff in its e-business division. Those set to use the system include office, management and IT employees.

"The Department feels that a significant part of the staff training needs can be met with an e-learning solution and the management of the department support the initiative," DITR said in a request for tender.

Specifically, DITR asked for the supply, implementation and maintenance of an online training and education system, as well as an online reference library and help material.

The e-learning system would be accessible at work and from home, and deliver reports on its usage, as well as produce certificates for evidence of participation, according to the request for tender.

DITR also flagged the possibility of running custom courses later in the system's life.

The contract is for three years, with the system to be installed prior to the 07-08 financial year.

E-learning has grown in popularity among corporates and other large organisations in recent years. Last year Tabcorp and Bond University both rolled out e-learning systems.
