Department of Finance enters the Matrix

The federal Department of Finance has flagged plans to more widely use the open source MySource Matrix content management system on government Web sites.

"Finance maintains a number of Web sites within the MySource Matrix content management system (CMS) and intends to develop new Web sites and migrate a number of other Web sites to the CMS," stated a tender document calling for a vendor to assist the department on the project.

One obvious contender for the Finance contract is Squiz, the local company which developed MySource Matrix. Squiz has worked extensively in the past with the Australian Government Information Management Office -- a division of Finance -- to implement the CMS internally.

The company's executive director Stephen Barker told ZDNet Australia  Squiz would be responding to the tender, although he expected stiff competition.

The tender documents call for respondents to have recent experience both installing and configuring MySource Matrix, as well as providing training and helpdesk services for the CMS.

"An important aspect of the services requested in the request for tender is the training of departmental staff in the administration and use of the CMS," stated the documents.

ZDNet Australia  understands while a number of smaller local companies had the capability to respond to Finance's requirements, larger fish like Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu were likely to have in-house MySource Matrix expertise and could be attracted.
