The PlayStation 3 officially went on sale in Australia overnight, with hundreds of gamers lining up outside more than 500 retail stores across the nation to purchase Sony's latest console at midnight launch events.

The largest event was held at Sydney's Pitt St mall, where retail store Myer and Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) teamed up to present launch night activities which included prize giveaways, live demonstrations and a screening of Casino Royale on the big screen. Approximately 70 people lined up to grab their consoles at the Myer Pitt St store, with a hundred-strong crowd looking on. The PS3's arrival comes exactly one year after Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched in Australia. Microsoft's launch event for the 360 -- which was also held in Sydney's Pitt St mall -- drew a crowd of close to 1000 people.

Danny Zarka, from Pyrmont in Sydney, was the first to purchase a PS3 at the Myer launch event.

Other retailers across Sydney also held launch events, most of which drew modest crowds. The Harvey Norman store at the Moore Park SupaCenta had close to 40 people attend its midnight launch activities, which included an appearance from Australian boxing great Kostya Tszyu. Tszyu was on hand to demo Fight Night Round 3, as well as sign the first PS3 sold at the store.

Over at EB Games at Bondi Junction in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, the launch crowd was even smaller, with approximately 20 people lined up outside the store to purchase their PS3s. Five major retailers opened late in the large shopping district of Chatswood, on Sydney's North Shore. The EB Games at Chatswood had about 30 in their line, while the near-by Toys'R'Us store scored 20.

Approximately 70 people lined up at the Myer launch event.

Despite the low turn-out, retailers were generally positive about the launch of Sony's next-generation product. Myer chief executive officer Bernie Brooks said his chain of stores experienced an extremely high number of PS3 pre-sales, citing the figure at more than AU$2 million. Harvey Norman general manager for computers and communications Rutland Smith said his company is estimating that the PS3 will generate close to A$10 million in sales by Monday, with 50 percent coming from pre-orders.

SCEA is also bullish, reporting that more than AU$20 million worth of PS3s had been pre-ordered prior to launch.

Business issues didn't concern gamers waiting in line for their console, though. Danny Zarka, the first person in line at Myer's Pitt St store, said he had been anxiously awaiting the PS3 for more than a year.

    PS3 launch a fizzer.... Anonymous -- 23/03/07

Michael Ephraim is full of BS......The PS3 launch was a dismal failure, crowd numbers were way, way down on SCE expectations, and there is NO WAY that 20,000 PS3 will be sold through by Monday 26/3/07. Many, many of the stores that opened for midnight launches were lucky to sell even a handful of units and most were closed again by 12.15am, with staff & security ounumbering actual buyers.

Consumers are voting with their feet and staying well away from PS3 due to its high price and weak game offering upon launch, plus a host of other issues. When it's RRP gets within $100 of X-Box 360, then you can expect the sales to rev up.....

The reality has set in. The way over-priced, over-rated and under-equipped ps3, is nothing other but an overblown disappointment. Retailers trying to cash in on the hype are left riding on waves of publicity BS by making ridiculous claims of "massive pre-sales" when the reality is even with blue-ray, you can't sell ice to Eskimos.

you are kidding me right? the base unit for the ps3 is twice as fast then the xbox (premium, ultimate, or whate ver adjective they decided to use). comes with a hard drive. and has stunning graphics and games that can be up to 50gB... while xbox is stuck on the technology of the end of the millenium.

oh well boys will be boys, and men will be men. so when your waiting for your game to load. we will be playing on our widescreen tv on high definition on our extra levels

    peace out

    Blu-Ray Anonymous -- 25/03/07 (in reply to #320076856)

Thats funny that you say we will be loading when in fact it takes longer for blu-ray to read information of its disk than standard dvd. The graphics are basically the same and to watch dvds in 1080p then you have to buy a 4-5k tv that can display that type of resolution. I'm right with my 360 thanks

    Major flop! Anonymous -- 23/03/07

I work for a major retailer and we only sold 2 and they were both preorders! Go figure!

Lets give it two weeks Anonymous -- 23/03/07

I sure hope those people are happy after waiting so long. Then again, for those people who got FREE HDTVs, I'd say they won regardless of if the PS3 met expectations or not.

I've read that one guy was interviewed, saying that he heard that the PS3 was way better than the X360. Sad to say, but he'll suffer the biggest disappointment of all. Reports all over have stated that the launch was basically dead. Only a few people. The US launch was much, much bigger and the PS3 isn't so hot now. I mean, even in my small town of Tallahassee, FL the Circuit City alone had over 100 people.

Before today a lot of analysts predicted that the PS3 would now rise up and conquer all. However, Rome was not built in a day. I bet they're gonna be doing a lot of analysis now. Like I said, give it two weeks before things almost come to a stand still. A price drop is emminent and I'm expecting it to happen at E3 2007 (June), whether Sony likes it or not. If not, they're just going to have to completely market the PS3 as a cheap blu-ray player and that's when even more PS3 exclusives are going to be lost. Devil May Cry 4 and Ace Combat 6 coming to the X360 happened for a reason. I'm not gonna say abandon ship, but if this keeps up, the PS3 just might sink... as a game console. The Dreamcast must be turning in its grave.

PS3 is for nerds with more money than sense Anonymous -- 24/03/07

Sony has abused the trust of consumers too many times - anyone tat supports their products is basically techno-wannabe.

yeah uhh.. Andrew Jones -- 25/03/07

Just incase you didn't know, one of Sony's biggest seller on the PS2 (Grand Theft Auto) is now no longer exclusive to Sony, and Rockstar games have announced the 360 version will have extra episodes.

I think healthy debate on console vs console is great but your points are non-sensical. End of the millenium console? Are you kidding? The PS3 and the XBOX360 benchmark pretty close to one another. The PS3 has the blu-ray, but the massive amount of data storage that it offers is years ahead of being utilized by any game developers.

I think it's pretty obvious that you don't have the background to make broad generalizations about technology.
