Tasmania's Connect Credit Union has created a new chief information officer position to bring a higher level of skills to the financial group's rapidly growing IT department.

"We've got a technical services manager, but we're creating a higher level position over that," a spokesperson for the credit union told ZDNet Australia via telephone today.

"We're building the business and our technology, and investing quite a bit of money and resources into it. We see the need for having someone sitting over the top in that role."

Connect is not alone in seeing a need for a CIO post, with Queensland energy utility Energex and Perth's Curtin University both creating new top-level IT positions this month.

In Connect's case, the new CIO will oversee a rapidly expanding IT department of around a dozen staff, supporting the credit union's seven branches across Tasmania.

In October, Connect said it had more than 60,000 members, with AU$690 million in funds under management and a further AU$178 million under advice.
