eBay has not said specifically what went wrong. But a message on the site said that after an initial outage was repaired, the site was then crippled by a "network anomaly."
"We are working on correcting the network issues and restoring full functionality as soon as possible," the message to users said.
eBay said it would extended auctions scheduled to close during the outage, and refund fees.
The auctioneer suffered its longest outage to date in June, when the firm experienced multiple problems with the databases that power its auction engine.
Since then the company has redoubled efforts to reinforce
its site and has tried to assure customers that it would not
have such a sustained crash again.
